I am trying to help someone find a weekend rental (7/27 am to 7/29 pm, unlimited miles) from a local NYC rental location and all my codes are being rejected, yielding a price of $300-400. How far away from NYC proper do I have to rent to get my corp code accepted? Thanks in advance for any advice.
ETA: It will take the corp AWD, but rejects coupons. How far away do I need to go to get a lower rate? Or is there a go-to AWD for NYC weekends?

If you want to use coupons, try location AB8 (New Hyde Park, just over the Queens/Nassau border). The location will pick up from the Long Island Rail Road station by pre-arrangement, but can also be reached by bus.
NYC neighborhood stores do not take coupons, because they are in a high cost, high demand area, with space constraints.
In other parts of the country, ex suburban locations, the rental companies need to entice people to rent, hence the coupons. And they can fill a suburban strip mall parking lot with as many cars as they can rent.
But in Manhattan, many millions of people do not own cars. Some of them want to go away on the weekends. They are often limited to neighborhood locations within easy mass transit range. This usually means small, high rent parking garages. The rental companies think, No need to entice these people with coupons there.
Auto Enthusiast, I get why it' so pricey. They are winning with demand vs. supply.

Depending on where you friend intends to travel with the car, renting in at another location might be even better. AB8 is good for a trip to Long Island; an Avis location in New Jersey (like Edison/Metropark) could work if driving South; a location in Westchester County (or Stamford, CT) could be good for a trip to New England. The challenging part might be finding a location that will be open for a return on Sunday afternoon/evening.
And be sure to price the rental with and without an Avis AWD; some corporate rates might actually be higher than the weekend rates Avis offers to the general public. Check the "Deals" tab at www.avis.com for current offers.

Some locations will allow you to drop the car off if they are closed, even though you stay liable for the car until they open and check it in. Might be worth a call to see if the location you want allows this.

I've been through quite a few AWDs and haven't found one to prevent the 1-way fees, without making the rate jump significantly. If you have one you like, I'd be glad to try it on the once-in-a-blue-moon time that I need a 1-way

Pretty much all Avis corporate rates are blacked on out on weekends in NYC, but if you're able to pick up the car on a Thursday evening many times they're accepted. For instance punch in 7/26 PM through 7/29 PM at E64 location with AWD A442100. Rate pulls up at $197 all in for an intermediate.
