$40 Avis coupon for $20 on Groupon

Just saw this on Groupon:

$20 for $40 toward a rental from Avis Car Rental

Have to use their rate code, which means the discount will be off the full retail rate, which as usual for groupon, makes it hard to get a good deal.

What a joke. Reminds me of the retailer who promotes an item "half-off" but, this only after jacking up the price 50% from the day before.

Yea... I wouldn't waste my $$$$

Using publicly available AWD code to which I am entitled (AARP)plus the coupon that Avis advertises I did a dummy booking for LAX for one week at the end of October I can rent a full size car for $275.00

Without the codes using their site that I must use to be able to use the Groupon deal the rate climbs to $319.00.
Need I go further?

Depends how you use it.

Now on the other hand, I just did a car search for a weekend getaway (sat morn->monday morn). It came out to $44 . My corporate AWD knocked it down like $3, but I can get the same savings by "pre-paying" which isn't available on my corporate code.

Unless I'm missing something, I'd imagine the rates shown at avis.com with no codes entered are eligible for use on the coupon.

Just did a dummy booking for the same rental I have in OCT.

Current rental is using A074800. $90 ai (2 days in TPA)

Just by changing the AWD from the Groupon (S666500) it went down another $7 to $83 ai.

Why do I need to buy the goupon? Avis Preferred go straight to your car.

But does the groupon have a coupon code to take another $40 off of that?

And who do you see to give the groupon to?

deleted.

Anyone that bought this Groupon trying to make a reservation for next year? I know Groupon's expiration is 12/31/2011 but Avis' paper voucher doesn't have an actual exp date. Btw, some rates are actually great, $45 ai for two days which means $5 after Groupon is presented at the rental counter.
