I tried to buy 50,000 on the 3rd, but once I entered it, I could not get the web site to proceed to the next page to even give me the price. I got as far a 50,000 miles + 50,000 miles bonus, and that was it.
In hindsight, I'm glad. I tried to book some of my regular travel between SJO and MDE using the miles already in my account, and availability was awful. I ended up using Mileage Plus, and one of the flights is actually on AV, but Lifemiles didn't even offer it.
No sense having miles if they can't be used, and I'm not confident that they'll be available if this route - 4 weeks out - was not. I've flown it many times, and there has always been reasonable availability, even if the schedule was less than ideal or they pushed me into business when I wanted economy.
It does look like they aren't the only ones tightening up. Copa, although they have plenty of availability on most dates I've needed, is offering only Business Saver. I may be able to switch some of them to Economy Saver if it gets close and they don't sell out, but I can't count on it. It has been very hit and miss lately.

You were not doing it right. You have to find the sweet spot which is somewhere between 42 and 62% of buying extra miles just like in the example I quoted in the other thread, you can still get the rate of 15 USD per 1000 miles.

Has anyone worked out ecxactly where the sweet spot is? I noticed the other day that it went down to $15 and then up to around $17 if I kept on buying more like you mentioned above.

I think it depends on the total amount needed. My example above was for a total redemption of 230,000 miles but if the total was less I think the sweet spot would be narrower, probably around 45-55%, anyways it's pretty easy to figure it out by doing a sample booking.

Just received this email:
You are still on time to buy LifeMiles and receive double!
Buy miles 2x1 before December 19th, of 2014 and receive a 100% additional bonus. Don´t let this opportunity pass you by and start 2015 enjoying your miles in air tickets or with our vast partner network.
So what does this mean, I can buy 30000 and get 90000 ?

Got this email this morning, after maxing out the last promotion making me ineligible for this one:
Dear SJLandsverk:
Just for you! LifeMiles has increased your maximum miles purchase limit up to 250.000 LifeMiles. Take advantage of this promotion and Buy miles 2X1, so you can continue enjoying your miles by flying or with our commercial partners.
It´s very easy! Buy now at LifeMiles.com and your miles will be accrued in your account
Think Avianca wants to sell some miles?

This one-time Lifemiles enthusiast will no longer be buying miles at any price. Still can't find any RT "Limited Seats" award tickets between SJO & MDE unless I'm willing to wait until the last couple of days before departure, and it's still no guarantee.
I used some of my banked miles to fly an employee DFW-SAL-SJO-SAL-DFW in early February. Had the miles been 100% purchased through the promotions, there would have still been no savings over what it would have cost if buying a paid, mileage-EARNING ticket on AA or UA.
Going forward, the miles earned on the US Bank Lifemiles card will be all I worry about. Those miles are truly free, so I'll not worry about redemption value. Buying to use on my most frequently traveled route within Latin America on AV, however, is now something for the history books. Looks like I'll be flying Copa from now on. Even if I must pay with $$$ , Copa's routing through PTY is much more convenient.
