Could Avianca/Taca return to Boston?

Almost 350,000 flew from Boston to Central/South America last year.

Could Avianca/Taca start a Boston flight to capture some of that traffic?
Would competing with DL or AA (and in some cases B6) be too much?
Would they codeshare with US/UA?

What hub would be used?

Bogota? Best for connecting to South America but low O&D (37 PDEW to Colombia)
Return to San Salvador? Some O&D and has some connections
San Jose? Could stimulate more tourism and has some connections
Guatemala City? Currently highest O&D but not enough connections

UPDATE: Two months after posting this CM announced BOS.

I've heard that AV has applied for BOG-BOS. Any hints of when it may start?

There's rumors of a new carrier being announced at BOS tomorrow.

You could be right. I'd say wait until tomorrow haha.

JetBlue has what I would deem a fairly easy service BOS-FLL-Colombia (a few spots)

It doesn't help me at all, but I'm psyched to see AV expand anywhere.

Turned out to be the Norwegian Air Shuttle announcement for US- French Caribbean service.

Next week Colombian Civil Air authority does review the application for BOG-BOS service.

Article is in Spanish and mentioning of route is on page 5. Plan is daily A319 it seems. I would start it either December or after April.

I hope AeroCivil grants them permission. I would use this flight a lot, since I have a ton of family in BOG.

Its supposedly was approved according to Reply 189 here:

They may be ironing out times between both airports. I'm guessing Massport who operates BOS, would want them to land in the am thus a red-eye BOS-BOG is highly likely.

AV has to only serve this route 3x weekly to get the incentive package too. I wonder if they do 4-5 weekly off peak and daily peak. CM learned the hard way to do this on BOS-PTY.

Avianca will begin service from Bogota to Boston in an A319, 4 times a week, starting on June 1st. No official announcement yet though.

The flights have been bookable for a week. It is a red-eye from BOS.

Interesting. However, I am not sure if that much extra capacity to Central/South America is economically feasible considering the presence of AM and CM at BOS.

BOS-South America was well over 450 PDEW for 2016. You mention AM and CM but you are forgetting the 800 lb gorilla and that is AA and the MIA hub who is easily the market share leader.

http://www.routesonline.com/news/29/...a-boston-link/

CM is bonafide competition but BOS-MEX is just out of the way for Central and South America connections - granted people do take these connections but they didn't even make the list in the link above .

I think it would have been a neat out of the box idea if AV also added BOS-SAL 3x weekly which would cover most of Latin America with the mini-hub there.

I'm going to be taking this BOS>BOG route on Avianca next week and for anyone who's taken it yet I was wondering what the plane quality they've been using has been like? Are there in-seat entertainment systems?

Any info would be appreciated.

Yes, Avianca's A319s and A320s have seatback AVOD.
