NZ Auckland to Wellington train scrapped

The removal of passenger train services in NZ continues. Auckland <-> Wellington gone from 30 September 2006.

NZ Herald

Quote:
The Overlander train service between Auckland and Wellington will cease at the end of September.

Toll NZ blamed continual loss of patronage.

It said the service, which had run at a substantial loss for many years, faced increased costs and competition from cheaper travel options and was no longer viable.

Boy, am I glad I took it in March...it was a wonderful experience, it pisses me off that tourists that pay to go all the way to NZ choose to travel from place to place in cramped, boring coaches. Nothing beats having some hot muffins in the morning as you watch the lovely scenery go by

I took it in January and I would have to agree. Too bad.

I was very sad to read this news, having greatly enjoyed a trip on the Christchurch-Picton TranzCoastal during my all too brief week in NZ earlier this month. I had defintely hoped to enjoy the North Island train on a future trip.

The closure has prompted me to take one last trip before it is too late. All my previous trips were overnight so will be nice to see the great scenery this time.
