Doesnt United Airlines have a flight from LAX to auckland? How many miles do you need with either AA or United to get there from North America?

Welcome to FT mcavarkapa

No UA hasnt flown to AKL for several years. However you can use UA Mileage Plus miles on Air NZ, either direct or via Australia.

For information on the number of miles needed I suggest you visit the AA forum and UA forum.

I'll dig out a link and post when I find it. This year has been fairly poor so far.

This winter seems to have lots of rain and not much snow... (Not that it's been warm though...)

Thanks so much for taking the time to post all of this great info, Kiwi. My wife and I will be taking a cruise from Sydney to Auckland in Mar06 and this will certainly come in handy!! Cheers!

You're welcome. I apologise for taking so long to complete it, but will keep working away on it.

Hi,

Thanks Kiwi Flyer! I may be heading in that direction, likely the Canterbury region, in the near future and appreciate the info! How would you describe the weather extremes in that part of the country, and how difficult is it in general to get around the S. Island and hop between S and N?

South Island: Weather in December

I'll be visiting South Island (Christchurch, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Franz Josef Glacier) in the first two weeks of December. What can I expect re: the weather?

Cheers!

Fairly warm (it is summer!) but can be cold enough to need a sweater at times. Storms can sweep in and be of noteworthy ferocity, but this is a good time of the year. If you are driving pay attention to the weather and the river crossings. Fox is a nicer glacier to my taste (also better walks available).

KiwiFlyer you put my The Ultimate Qantas Guide to shame . I do know how many hours you've put into setting this up already *gulp* and can only guess at the research time for each of the remaining posts ...

Don't worry, I'm not about to replicate this for Australia....

Go the Wallabies tonight against The All Blacks

Welcome to FT Pantalaimon

By near future do you mean Sept? If so then that is early spring so weather still cool and changeable.

Easiest way to get around the south island is by car - more flexibility to see the things that interest for the time you want to spend. A poor second is to take a bus tour (some passes allow hop on/off as you go). Rail is limited. Flying outside the main centres is expensive and a hassle.

To get between south and north island either fly (from Queenstown, Christchurch, Nelson or Blenheim) or ferry (from Picton and takes about 3 hours to Wellington). Cost is similarish. If taking ferry then look into leaving the car in Picton and getting a new one from Wellington (its quite expensive to take cars across the ferry).

Thanks KiwiFlyer! Yes, I'm hoping to visit the South Island in late September. Really enjoying all the info you've been posting!

I will eventually complete the rest of the info - but probably not in time for your trip.

I've added nifty way to find Auckland street addresses to the Auckland post.
