Straight to Gold?

Gday

Just a quick question:

I will be flying SYD-FRA-SYD in January on TG in F. Will this be enough to get me straight to Star Gold in Asiana Club?

I've look it all up and believe it will be however just want to hear the experts here first

Thanks!

Just to be clear, it will qualify for OZ Gold, which is not *A Gold, which the OP was asking about. For *A Gold you need to reach OZ Diamond, which is another 10K.

If those miles were credited to BD's FFP, they would earn at least 300%, or over 60K, which I believe is enough for *A Gold.

You will earn 150% of actual miles flown. The distance is 10,200 miles so you will get 15,300 miles each way or 30,600 miles return. To get to OZ Diamond you need 40,000 miles which would be another return trip to ICN in Y or similar within the next two years.

Thanks guys

Maybe I will join BD instead?! Straight to Star Alliance Gold from one flight seems to be worth it... My TG Gold expires this year and I will not have enough miles to requalify

Thanks again

Choosing between the two will depend on what your flying patterns will be in the future and what you want out of the FFP.

If you just make one trip per year as you mentioned, then I think you'll likely be much better off with BD. They will be easier for you to qualify and maintain status and you'll earn more miles and they have an excellent earn/burn ratio.

If you'll be making another trip of about 10K miles soon after this trip, but won't be flying much over the next few years, then OZ could be better. If you sign up before your first flight for Asiana Club, then fly the qualifying 40K miles in let's say a month from that date, you'll get *Gold for a full four years. With BD you'll only get it for one year and will need to fly 38K qualifying miles per year to maintain your status. The earn/burn ratio isn't that great with OZ, but the long *G status period might make up for it.

If you're flying in F all the time, then BD with it's 300% miles for F is going to be very hard to beat. If this trip is a one-off trip though in F, then BD's huge advantage won't be so noticeable on future flights.

The main advantage of OZ is that you only need to fly 40k miles in two years and it is valid for up to 4 years. BD requires to fly those miles every year. But in C or F BDs earning ratio is just great. And the burn rate is fantastic especially with cash & miles.

If my sign up date is Jul this year, does that mean as long as I fly 40k miles within the 2 years period from Jul 2009, I will get OZ Diamond for 4 years?

Kind of. From the moment you sign up you have 2 years to get your status. So from Jul 2009 to Jun 2011. Whatever status you have gained then will be valid until Jun 2013. So if you get your 40,000 miles now, you will get 3.5 years of status out of this. If you get your 40,000 miles only in June 2011 then you will only get 2 years out of it.
