Bangkok - a good place to get camera accessories cheaply?

Specifically I'm looking at purchasing lenses, but open to other purchases if the price is right. This would be for a Canon Digital SLR.

Is that something that's possible in BKK? or are the prices about the same?

Is there a store/market that I should visit?

Any help/suggestion/advice would be greatly appreciated.

"Same" as where? Electronics are not very competitively priced in Bangkok compared to (say) SIN or HKG because of comparatively steep import tariffs, but they may well still be cheaper than (say) most of Europe.

That said, I don't know of any large/specialist camera dealers in the Big Mango, and would be interested in any hints myself.

Sorry, I meant US. I live in Florida but most of my camera purchases are done with 2 New York based giants, www.BHphotovideo.com and www.willoughbys.com.

I'm not looking for magical prices, but since I'll be in BKK next week I would like to know if there is a possibility of saving few $ on a major purchase. The lenses that I'm interested in are priced between $500-$1500, so even a 10% discount would be a nice savings.

I have found BKK to be about the same price as the US if not more expensive on a lot of electronic items. I typically go to pricegrabber and just look the cost of a few items that I need and then just see how it compares. My biggest problem is that although I travel to BKK a lot it is a pain to return somethig if it is broken or have problems. I have even found a lot of stuff cheaper in the US than HKG these days which certainly wasnt as much the case in the past. Japan is a better option for camera equipment in my opinion.

The problem with H.K. (and Singapore) is high overhead expenses due to high land costs. The U.S. retailers have over come their high wage costs by increasing volume and hence became more competitive.

I had a quick look at dSLR prices in BKK last week and can't say they were particularly attractive even compared to Canadian prices.

There were a few shops I noticed on Silom Road, on the NW side of the street that seemed to specialise in high end stuff (I saw one that focussed on large format film cameras only somewhere else). One is in the SSP building.

Defintely better to stick with US or HK. The prices will be higher in BKK and also there may not be a warranty.

But if you want to look...

You might find a good deal at Pantip Plaza on Petchburi Rd... Mainly computer stuff, though.

I've found Singapore to be much cheaper than Bangkok for digital cameras - no experience with accessories though.

The legit places to find current prices in BKK are http://www.shutterphoto.com/spc/index.html and http://www.bask1.com

The "grey market" shops can be found on Charoenkrung Rd (parallel to Yowarat Road a.k.a. Chinatown). Supposedly the most well-known one is called Charoenkrung Camera Shop and is near the Leng-Neng Yee chinese temple. Diagonally across the crossroads there is an area called Klongthom where the other shops are.

I've looked in Bangkok, Tokyo, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and didn't find that the pricing to be anything special. Given that many only have foreign warranties, I'd always try and get stuff from the US.
