There are just so many interesting and different places within striking distance of BKK. That's why I've been using it as a hub over several years to give time for each place.
The most outdoor and also cheapest has been Luangprabang. Air Asia has just started a welcome budget flight from Bangkok DMK which is great. There is nothing straight or flat around Luangprabang so plenty of exercise if biking. It is a laid back place where its natural setting and heritage site is difficult to beat. And very low cost too.
