I'm heading to BsAs tonight and saw the weather forecast for Friday and Saturday (I'm off to Bariloche on Sunday thank goodness) is calling for high temps of 96 and 100 degrees!
What do Portenos do when it's that hot? Are there good places to spend time that won't lead to melting in the streets while walking around?

Been to Tigre, out to the islands. Very pretty and peaceful but not sure it would be much cooler. Shopping malls, well, I avoid them in the US so not sure I want to fly all the way to wonderful BsAs for a mall. The few I've been to seem like malls anywhere in the world, even have many of the same stores.
Might try MALBA, any other museum suggestion?
Long lunches and coffee in the shade. Watch the world go by.
Any good markets on Friday or Saturday?

These are all located fairly close together. So you could walk from one to the other.
Go and lie down with a large fan or good air conditioning unit close by.
All good advice above if, like me, you can't stand the heat. Actually its not too bad walking in the streets for short periods as one side is always in the shade and if you feel too hot just pop in to the nearest shop to cool down or go for a seat in the nearest cafe. You definitely don't want to be out in the sun for very long doing anything physical.
Seriously, what do Portenos do on such days, or have they all left town for the beach?
Got it in one! This is the peak holiday season for Argentines and many people head to the coast or Punta del Este in Uruguay. Buenos Aires is very quiet right now - the reduction in traffic and fewer people on the street is really noticeable For those of us left in the city, it makes a nice change!
That is my one problem with Buenos Aires in the summer: the lack of airconditioning. Even restaurants that have a/c, the units are small and barely bring down the temperature. My recommendation (if you are a morning person), wake up earlier, do some of the sightseeing, walking etc... in the morning before noon, then have a nice long lunch with lots of wine, go back to your hotel/apt and take a long nap.
By 5-6 pm it gets nicer and if you are closer to the water, sometimes there is a nice breeze.
the best thing about summer is that the days are very long and the sun sets late. people are out in cafes and bares having a drink at 8-9 pm before dressing up for dinner.
