Nordic Countries - Denmark Rail & Eurail Country Pass

We'll be staying in Copenhagen in early October, and were thinking about a trip to Vejle & Jelling. I used the Rejseplanen.dk website to plan out an itinerary, but even when I choose English, some of the important pages revert back to Danish.

Anyway, it looks like we can take the IC121 out and the IC 1664 back. Best I can tell, though, the fare is going to be 300 DKK per person, each way. At today's rate, that converts to about US$60.

For US$75, though, we can get 3-day EuRail 1-Country Pass for Denmark, which would include the return ticket, as well as any other rail travel we can fit in over those 3 days. It seems like an easy decision, but neither of us have ever traveled by rail in Europe, so I'm not sure if there's anything we're not considering.

Is it pretty straightforward to use the Eurail pass on the DSB system? Are reservations generally required on the intercity lines, or might we be able to just show up at a station shortly before a scheduled train?

Thanks for any suggestions.

The Eurail Pass you mention seems by far the best option and quite a bargain giving you lots of flexibility. Seat reservations are only on option. Can be nice to have , if you travel on peaktimes like Fridays and late Sundays , but as its a fairly short ride to Vejle / Jelling I wouldn´t bother if I were you. Worst case you will have to stand in the corridor for a while until vacant / unclaimed seats turns up. There is a little electronic display by each seat so you can tell if its reserved or not. 2 trains every hour throughout the day between Vejle and Copenhagen .

True the 3 day Denmark pass prices out at EUR 63.
Standard DSB (the train operator on Copenhagen - Jelling) prices out at DKK 300 per person each way. They do have som discounted tickets at DKK 250 each way (so called "Orange" departures), but still the EuroPass is the better deal.

You might even be able to use it on the local Copenhagen S-trains - you used to able to that. I could not find any updated information in this regard though.

Thanks cph_flyer and OFFlyer for both of your helpful replies. We'll pick up the Eurail passes here in the US before we leave, and look forward to exploring your city.

Is there anything either of you think we should make sure not to miss while we're in town?

My girlfriend and I will be in CPH from Thursday through Sunday of next week (minus the day trip mentioned above), and we particularly enjoy art and history museums, interesting neighborhoods to explore on foot or bike, live music, and unique shops.

Art:
Statens Museum for Kunst, National Gallery of Denmark www.smk.dk is a must

History
National museum is an option. www.natmus.dk

Music
Check out www.aok.dk for a list

Neighborhoods:
Christianshavn and Christiania er worth a stroll. Also Nørrebro has some positive aspects. The most interesting shops you will find on Elmegade and Ravnsborggade on Nørrebro as well as the area around Sankt Peder Stræde in the center.

Do not that Danish schools close for Fall holiday Friday October 9th, so if that is your day to Jelling, expect some traffic. Although sine you will be outbound in the morning and eastbound in the afternon it is not likely to affect you that bad.

Enjoy your stay.
