Visionary - yes!
Lunatic - yes!
Loss for the city - definitely!

I read a biography of this character a few years back. He was one of a kind old vegas.

Long live the polish prince!

Bob was actually responsible for my first trip to Vegas back in '86. I received one of his typical Vegas World offers: Pay $298 for 2 nights, receive $600 in one-time use gaming chips. Winnings paid in real chips. So assuming an average 2% loss on your gaming at blackjack, craps, etc. the expected cost of your room would be @ $6 per night - a tremendous deal even in those days.

Of course most people (myself included) did not cash in the real chips but simply kept gaming, and Vegas World ended up doing pretty well until it was imploded to make room for the ill-fated Stratosphere.

:(

Never got the chance to stay at Vegas World, but always marveled at the ad in the back of my dad's late 70's Playboys.

OK, I will tell you an embarrassing story.

I actually had an interview for a very large casino, and strings had been pulled to get that interview in the Marketing Department. I pretty much had the job, if I had JUST SHUT UP when asked in passing about Las Vegas marketing.

I mentioned how I thought Stupak's Playboy ads, with his gimmick come-on was really a pretty brilliant strategy.

Let me tell ya, that flew like the proverbial lead balloon...freezers never get as cold as that room got in an instant and I knew right then and there I blew the interview, big time.

Sure enough - the people who got me the interview called me a few days later and said, "Exactly how stupid are you?! Why in the hell did you say that about Stupak's marketing scam in an interview?!"

To be honest, life has changed for the better and I think it is a good thing I didn't get that job - but at the time, I was kickin' my ... for bringing it up.

BTW, I saw Stupak a few months ago at a restaurant and he didn't look healthy, but I could overhear him giving his two cents on how things should change in Vegas...he still had plans and his vision.
