I stayed at the YHA ( Hostelling International ) hostel in Newcastle a couple of years ago ( in a dorm room ) and it was decent; clean, quiet neighbourhood close to downtown, friendly staff, edible breakfast.

Unfortunately it looks like they don't have single rooms, so if you need privacy you will have to pay for both beds in a 2 bed room and it will cost you almost 40 pounds per night.

I believe that one of the UK hotel chains ( it might be Best Western but I am not sure ) has 25 pound per night deals for rooms if you are booking in advance, but that probably won't help if you need lodging next week. If I find any more info on this I will edit my post.

Enjoy Newcastle.

I stayed at the YHA in Newcastle in December in a 4-bed shared room. It's just a block away from a Metro train station if you need to get into the city center. Breakfast was included.

Travelodge currently has a sale underway so you might check there for hotel.

Thanks for the reminder tom911. It was Travelodge that I was thinking of in my previous post. I had a look at their site and there are some good deals ( 12 pounds and 19 pounds per night ) for stays in Spring 2010. Closer in the prices are substantially higher, but certainly worth the OP checking out.

I should say that when I first noticed this thread I assumed that the OP was asking about Newcastle, England. I suppose it is possible that it is Newcastle, Northern Ireland ( a very nice small town on the Irish Sea backed by the Mountains of Mourne ) that is being referred to. In which case our wisdom won't help much. There is a decent YHA hostel in Newcastle, NI too.
