Quick question, if I fly NZ J SYD-WLG, can I actually use the SQ SilverKris lounge rather than the AirNZ lounge in Sydney? I have zero status with SQ or any *A. The reason I ask is that I have already been to AirNZ lounge and want to try something different.

Nope.
You can only if your stargold our above. also NZ's lounge is meant to be better than the SQ lounge.

In my opinion the NZ lounge is better then the SQ lounge.
Also, the SQ lounge only opens for a few hours before each SQ flight.

Has this changed recently? I though it was only if you where *G over above.
Plus you have to get past the SQ lounge dragons :D

That rule has been in place for ages.
Having said that the SQ lounge bouncers will encourage you to use NZ lounge instead (eg no boarding call made). Personally I prefer the NZ lounge. No worries about being chased out because SQ lounge is shutting or getting overcrowded, and the amenities are very average.

Excellent! I may as well pop into SYD SKL lounge to have a look. I have already tried NZ lounge in April, and I just want to try other lounges if I can. From what I see, NZ and SQ are the only 2 *A lounges, right?
Which lounge have better breakfast, SQ or NZ? My flight to WLG departs at 09:20am. So large selection of alcohol is not an important requirement.
Also for flight NZ142 SYD-WLG, would they serve breakfast or lunch?! Should be lunch, right?
Another thing, my trip will involve AKL-PPT and AKL-SYD during Xmas-New Year period. Has the NZ AKL lounge been renovated? Last time I was there in April they had the renovation proposal displayed at the front desk.

Yes only SQ & NZ at SYD (since UA closed their lounge).
NZ has a much better offering. They have pancakes!
The SYD-WLG flight will serve breakfast - a peeve of mine because by the time get into NZ it is mid afternoon.
AKL international lounge renovations were completed months ago. It is now much nicer, apart from the lack of bench space in the servery.

The only advantage to having *Gold when flying J is that you can bring a guest flying economy with you into the lounge
