Online Travel Booking and Bidding Agencies - Cheap Fare from CHC to MEL over New Year - booking strategy

A friend is travelling home to NZ and is look for low fare over New Year from CHC to MEL. We have check NZ and Virgin and because it is the festive season there are very (AUS$611 and US$456) high. Can anyone point us in the right direction anything cheaper. Could it be easier to book from NZ?

I can't comment if it's easier/cheaper to book from NZ. However, I would try Kayak.com. I use them for all my airfare searches becasue they check most of the major sites/airlines for pricing. However, I don't consider $456 very high, espcially around one of the busiest travel times of the year, but maybe that's just me.
