CrazY! I wonder how this show will affect Virgins image?

Porter Gale is one of the Exec Producers and she is the highest ranking Marketing Executive at Virgin. She also has a very good background in media and new media. I expect the show will not only be fun to watch, but give great exposure to VX and lend itself to higher spring bookings.

It will certainly lead to more brand awareness, and as a marketing exec, Porter made a great move. I would be concerned, though, as VX has no editorial control in this project, and the other people heading up this show are behind MTV's 'The Hills' and the guys behind 'Bridezillas'. That worries me, along with the fact it's to air on CW - the history here says entertainment (and it's already being labeled a docusoap) - will factor in higher than VX's brand image, but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. I do think this will dilute VX's upscale brand a bit no matter what, but it will get more butts in seats. I wish they had gone with more reality (not trash reality) than soap - there's inherent interest in following flight crews, esp within a company like VX - I don't think they need to go in the soap direction, nor in a direction like these producers are likely to take it.

I wouldn't assume that they have no editorial control. Porter Gale is an executive produced, after all.

Trash reality is what the small networks like. I get the feeling from the blog that it will focus on the life (outside of the airline) of the ITMs, as opposed to much on the plane itself. So, if done right, I can see it not adversely impacting the brand. I have a feeling Farrah (one of the ITLs) will be on it. She seems to have plenty of drama in her life, and the camera will like her *a lot*! I'd like to see Nicole and Pilar, as well!

I'm already dreading the selective editing, manufactured drama, and vapid banter. :( I have the feeling that the VX show will be like any other lame reality show that peddles in lowest-common-denominator frivolity. The way I read it, the show seems to be all about hedonism, premised on the construct that being an FA equals a jet-set lifestyle. It's a very problematic premise, IMHO, and possibly a disservice to FAs by sugarcoating what most FAs experience in their daily lives.

Airline was a great show because we got the schadenfreude factor of seeing WN pax behaving badly (a bit voyeuristic, sure). We also saw WN employees trying their best to reason with unreasonable people, or to help people whose problems went beyond WN's ability to help. There were also some very heartfelt (and heartbreaking) stories, not to mention some fascinating glimpses into behind-the-scenes operations. Most everyone on the show, from the employees to the pax, were "regular" folks, which was endearing and refreshing for reality TV.

But the market has spoken. Airline is off the air, and the CW treatment of VX is on the way. Maybe we will be pleasantly surprised, but this already seems to be below what I thought was VX's dignity. Having said that, I'm sure it will be good publicity. But it still seems destined to the future cultural trash heap. :td:

I agree, it should go far to promote good brand recognition and VX's hip, young image. Many ppl sitting in their lounge chairs will see a cool, mood-lit, iPod-like aircraft interior and (assuming the cast pans out) fun, attractive FAs.

Virgin Blue got into trouble a few years back for only hiring young, attractive FAs. All the publicity gave DJ the reputation of having more attractive FAs than their competition. I assume this show will provide VX with a similar reputation.

Hopefully it does not turn out to be trashy, but that may actually appeal to a specific demographic (VX aren't exactly known for targeting FF'ers). I'm sure VX were very careful to cast FAs that would portray the image they wanted.

Porter's a co-executive producer because she reps the airline and gave the go ahead for the marketing tie-in. She automatically gets a co-ep credit for that in entertainment parlance. That does not mean she or the airline gets day-to-day editorial content control. Obviously the entertainment guys nor the CW will want to piss off their marketing partner, but they will want to make a show that gets ratings, and they'll do what they know/what they do well, which is cater (as said above!) to The Hills/Bridezilla crowd, and there's not much VX can do about it. I would just rather see them do a more 'Airline' type show, rather than the soap I suspect this will be. May be wrong...we'll see!

i don't really get the point of the show, then. if a part of its existence is that it's meant to be advertising for VX, why make it about stewerdesses flying to places the actual airline doesn't fly?

of course, i don't watch anything else on the CW. if it's anything like "the hills" or "gossip girl", i'll stay far away.

Anyone who knows about the Reality show for which the channel is that? I would likely to watch on the TV during those days. Which specific time is that? I'm curious how is VX doing at the flight attendant school. Its exactly same as F9 that I watch on TV by 3 years ago. It was very interesting how F/A is in progress to have trained at F/A School.

It will air on the CW network, so in Phoenix that will be KASW, CW 6. The time it will show is still unknown, as it's not in production yet. It's scheduled for mid-season, meaning it won't air until next summer. I doubt it will show much of VX's flight attendant training school - it will concentrate on the lives of the ITM's as they jetset from city to city, and the people they meet.

Aviators, I doubt it will show much of any interline non-rev travel, for 2 reasons: VX won't want other airlines' brands shown on a show they're attached to, and VX is trying to use the show to build traffic in the cities they serve, as well as brand recognition. There's enough to play with in LA (home base for this crew), San Diego, Vegas, New York and Miami as far as large cities to appear glamorous, and then there's SFO and Seattle on top of that. (Not denigrating San Francisco or Seattle, of course, just thinking SD/MIA/Vegas/LA are all hot/beach cities, and NYC is NYC.) It's also only a limited series, so only eight 30 minute episodes to fill.

Ohhh, I see! It should have to be on the air for next summer 2010, am I correct? I am not sure for which specific time is that. I will have to keep eyeing on it. Then you will have to let me know real soon. I knows F/A will be very hectic at the school and it will try to get passed the exam. It will try to get on the next step to closer graduations from F/A school. It will be very tough at F/A school. They will have to take own responsibilities work for flying on the commercial airplanes. It will be secure and prioritization to best job work for F/A. It's importance for need to take the advantage of it. It should have to console up to be final exam test for approximately 5 or 6 weeks. It will have to do review how is she taught the safety and fasten seat belt all of the times. If they have any event of emergencies. They will have to be evacuations off the aircraft.

The first 45 seconds of the promo are nice. After :45 is what I was afraid of. The 'Nikole moving into the (production) house with her (production supplied) dogs' and "is everything ok?" moments are straight out of the The Hills. And when is the last time you saw a flight team get that excited about going to Vegas? :D

FYI, if the CW's new shows don't do well, they'll move this up and fill one of the slots. Beautiful Life was already canceled yesterday after 2 episodes. So may not have to wait til mid-season to see this.

You're probably right, *but* it could be that this is when they found out they were adding LAS as a destination. It would explain the excitement.

Hey, I was right about going to cities other than their destinations (interline), in spite of your doubts! ;-)

haha...just call me jaded! I did spot the 2 Southwest jets in the promo, too. ^

Looks like someone put up the promo prematurely - it's been yanked from both the CW's site and YouTube. One of the industry blogs in the Hwd Reporter had this to say about it before it got pulled:

CW's 'Fly Girls' trailer - 'The Hills' on a plane!

Email from a reader that sets up this hilarious clip as well as I ever could: "Love the blog! Just to let you know that The CW has put the trailer of their new Reality show/Virgin America commercial 'Fly Girls' on YouTube ... Looks like 'The Hills' on a plane! Only sluttier and with more product placement!"

Is it just me, or is there something worrisome about the line, "I went into training and 30 days later I was a flight attendant!"
-------------

That made me laugh. :)

I sincerely hope you're not flying carriers where the only responsibility of the FA's is to shut the door and bring you a cookie. ;) If you are, let me know which, so I can both avoid flying them and standing underneath their planes while in-flight!
