DiningBuzz! - The 50 best foods in the world and where to eat them

This is the kind of article meant to stir up discussion and debate rather than to settle arguments, so where better to place it than here? :)

Interesting (honest?) that the British-based writer and his cohorts didn't extol more than a couple of foods and locales from Jolly Olde Englande itself, e.g. Scottish fish and chips, steak & kidney pie, and imported olive oil. :D

From cake, steak and tapas, to oysters, chicken and burgers, Killian Fox roamed the world to find the 50 best things to eat and the best places to eat them in, with a little help from professionals like Raymond Blanc, Michel Roux, Ruth Rogers and Rose Gray.

If you're going to include Scotland in "Jolly Olde Englande" you may as well feature the other UK entry - number 1: Oysters from Strangfor Lough, Northern Ireland

Excluding the olive oil entry, that makes three.

Not a bad achievement with a list fixated on France, the USA, Spain and Italy (yawn)

Far from a 'world's best' list, it seems to be a 'some of my favourite food at a few favourite places I've been on holiday' kind of article - a poor imitation of DiningBuzz.

I'm surprised to see a pho joint, burger joint and milkshake joint at the top of the list.
It would just seem to reflect memorable bites on fun trips.

FTers can do MUCH better than these. :D

For example, on our trip to Adelaide, South Australia, for a wine tasting weekend, I found the best Aussie hamburger I've ever tasted. Oh, so juicy!

They'e been named Australia's best pizza maker, too. It won't get onto the UK lists until English folk come along and join the tasting trails. :)

Barossa chef named Australia's best pizza maker (http://www.hospitalitymagazine.com.au/article/Barossa-chef-named-Australias-best-pizza-maker/497794.aspx)[Hospitality Mag]

Damon de Ruiter has been named Australia's best pizza maker. It was third time lucky for South Australian chef and restaurateur Damon de Ruiter yesterday when he grabbed the title of Australia’s best pizza maker.

De Ruiter battled it out in the finals of the Dairy Farmers Best of the Best Pizza Challenge against young pizza maker Riccardo Moretti to be named the national winner of the annual competition.

It is the third year that De Ruiter—chef and owner of the Angaston Roaring 40s Café in the Barossa Valley—has been in the national finals of the competition which aims to find Australia’s best pizza maker.

As part of his prize package he will head to Las Vegas next year to be represent Australia on the international pizza making stage at a world pizza competition.
De Ruiter was named the overall gourmet pizza winner.
...the pair then were given a ‘Black Box’ of ingredients and had 30 minutes to plan and 20 minutes to prepare and cook a pizza from those ingredients to take the overall title. The ingredients the pair had to use included Wagyu beef bacon, rocket, capers, triple cream brie, red onion, and horseradish.

Following a tense cook-off in front of a huge crowd the judges tasted the pizzas and declared De Ruiter’s the winner. After winning De Ruiter said he was “knackered” and announced his retirement from the competition. “I’ll be getting some of my young staff to compete next year,” he said.

I would disagree on the pork belly choice of the author and kindly invite him to join me in Nanjing over the Chinese Full Moon Festival next week. There, Mr.Fox, you would be able to experience what a pork belly can taste like at it's best. ;)

And when on the way back to Londominium, please do stop at the Curry 36 in Berlin-Kreuzberg for a quality currywurst to compare with your Konnopke's recommendation...

Then, ramen is widely associated with Sapporo instead of Tokyo but that is another story.

I wonder how many restaurants were tried before they put this list together? Or how many dollars were thrown at them to make them the top restaurant??

I don't know, but then I did get sidetracked for an hour by the Snow's bbq mention. Had to find Lexington, TX (between Austin & Bryan/College Station) and see if any real bbq eaters endorsed it (they do!).

He lost me when he mentioned currywurst. A German staple to be sure, but one of the world's best foods? It's also hard to imagine that his favorite pizza is in America, but go figure. I might have listed reindeer filets in Finland and puffin in Iceland, both of which I thought were superb.

Pho 24 hits the mark. At least according to me and the long thread here in this forum. ;)

Also I can vouch for Laduree for the best macaroons.

13. Best place to eat: Strawberry tart
Restaurant de Bacon, Antibes, France. Funny I used to live there and never heard of this place?

22. Best place to eat: Peking Duck
Quanjude, Beijing Well it's the most famous for sure, and it is good, but I've had better.

35. Best place to eat: Kebabs
Bade Miya, Mumbai No, no, no, a thousand times no. The best place hands down is Isakander in Istanbul. Oh, by the way, these are the people who invented kebap.

I could go on and on...

22. +1 on the sentiment. Quanjude is handily beaten by a number of places in Beijing known to locals AND visitors.

35. The Persians and a number of others might disagree on who invented kebabs, and while I've never been to Turkey (or really any places in the Middle East), Bade Miya does make some great kebabs for what its worth.

Sorry, when I think Kebap, I automatically think Doner Kebap which is the one cooked upright on a spit and which was invented in Turkey. From the Wiki...Döner kebab, literally "rotating kebab" in Turkish, is sliced lamb, beef or chicken, slowly roasted on a vertical rotating spit. The Middle Eastern shawarma, Mexican tacos al pastor and Greek gyros are all derived from the Turkish döner kebab which was invented in Bursa in the 19th century.

More than fair enough. Love doner, I just try to stay away from eating it too often. Maybe the guide was thinking skewered meat or meat on a stick? That had to be around before the 1800s!

Yep, but it was always done horizontally. What Isakander invented in Turkey, was mounting the meat vertically.

The other thing about the remaining Isakander restaurants in Turkey is the supreme quality of the Bursa meat. I have never had a Kebap anywhere in the world as good as at this place.

I always thought Doner Kebab was invented in Hasir restaurant, Berlin. Definitely one of best kebab places I've tried.

wow.. just found out the inventor of Doner Kebab passed away recently...

Please do try the restaurant Balli close to the Sonnenallee S-Bahn station at Sonnenallee 132, Berlin-Neukoelln. Beats Hasir by some margin in my books and also offers very tasty skewers from the chaircoal grill.

Being born and raised in Wisconsin USA, one of the best foods in the world is Bratwurst (currywurst? c'mon!). And the best place to eat brats is in Sheboygan, WI. A double brat on a semmel roll with polish mustard has to be one of the world's great foods.

Without a doubt pho in Ho Chi Ming, pho 2000- or almost any place. Hot cheap, delicious flavor.
