I wonder... Why wouldn't SAS utilize their A321s for this medium-haul destination instead of the A330/340 in order to get better economy?

It's pretty close though! Maximum range for a Airbus 321-200 is 4907km and CPH-DXB is 4821km. Including wind correction the distance is just a bit too far.
Put a few extra tanks into their A319's just like QR and the deal is done.

The article mentions that there is virtually no competition for SAS in the nordics with this route, but Norwegian is flying OSL-DXB with a B737-800 once a week in winter time, and Air Baltic also had a direct route from Riga not so long ago (also with a B737).
So there is competition, but if SAS would increase frequency, they could also use a B737-800...

Acually, this winter, Norwegian will be flying both OSL-DXB and ARN-DXB 3x weekly and CPH-DXB 1x weekly

That was a 757. At least most of the time - maybe they subbed it with 737s for some flights (do they have the range?).

I´ve been on SK A321 from Copenhagen to Cairo before the new seats where installed. Business class out and Coach home. I think the aircraft is well suited for medium hall journeys and i can not understand why SK would be perfect for such destinations.
