Geezus, when will this end. Now Avis is bringing in a n/s policy and I have been renting from them for 20 yrs and I will quit smoking when I damn well feel like it. If they charge me, a Presidents Club member, one nickel, it will be the last they ever see of me!

I have written to them but no real response other than the standard PR grub which is so BS.

Avis owns the cars, and they have a right to set a no smoking policy. It is your right to take your business elsewhere.
No one is telling you to quit smoking, just to quit smoking in Avis cars. I don't let people smoke in my car either.

Already discussed a couple of weeks ago:

As expected, the thread is polarized along smoker/non smoker lines.

speaking as a former employee who's job was to ensure that the service dept kept the cars clean, if smoker's could keep the car clean and not incurr any odors that would offend other drivers, it wouldn't be an issue. But since smokey cars is among the top 3 complaints received every year, this move is not unexpected.

If you don't like the new policy, why stick around? Many companies have policies that I don't particularly like or agree with and I'll spend my dollars elsewhere. Why wait to be charged for doing something blatantly against the rules before shifting your business to someone else?

Why not keep a couple 'smoker cars' at each location? Could be a win-win.

One-ways to almost anywhere, which is something Avis specializes in, would make that idea impractical. While luxury and sports cars can be blocked out for one-ways, smokers want one-way rentals just like everybody else.

impossible. smokers lie about not needing a smoking car to get a better selection. those who actually are honest about needing a smoking car are rewarded with either "no smoking cars available" or the worst selection of cars imaginable.

Been there, tried that.

On the other hand, Avis has more non smokers like me who will refuse to drive cars that smell. Or even worse, the ones covered in perfume to cover it up. They have to balance the two.

Many states have enacted No Smoking laws in any public indoor facility... including in New York, all Restaurants and Bars. Would you cease to ever eat out again because you didn't like this policy? I'm sure many have, but really, is it that hard to adapt?
