Other Asian, Australian and South Pacific Frequent Flyer Programs - Cebu Pacific - 1 kg over - charged for excess!

I really like Cebu Pacific Air but sometimes these guys just rub the wrong way. On a recent CDO-MNL flight, my check in bag weighed 16kg. The free limit is 15kg. Sure enough, the agent charged me P100 for the excess and showed no mercy. The agent gives your boarding pass to the excess baggage lady and once you pay the fee - then you get the boarding pass back. Seems like a zero tolerance policy to me.
This said, the scale is old and probably not been recalibrated in years. Anyway - I paid the P100 ($2).
I am adding this to Flyertalk as people need to know that this airline shows no mercy.
The Cagayan de Oro ground staff need to lighten up a bit.

It depends on the airport. In Hong Kong, handled by Jardine, very very nice staff. Same in Davao.

That's Cebu Pacific policy you're dealing with. 5J is notorious for strictly implementing baggage weight limits, especially if you didn't purchase excess baggage beforehand. You could have brought some stuff out and bring it to your carry-on though. Contrary to what people think, they don't weigh carry-on luggage.

Yeah - I was just in shock that they wpuld actually charge me the 1kg excess. The amount of money is really insignificant, it is the policy. I have never seen an airline be so strict on this.

This is Cebu Pacific you're dealing with, not PAL. ;)

Cebu Pacific was often compared to Ryanair in the past. At least Lance Gokongwei isn't like Michael O'Leary. :D

But they often force me to check in a standard roller bag and of course charge that P400 "baggage reinstatement fee" or whatever it is called since I bought go lite fares.
They made us pay for 2kg excess (3 pax, 3 bags) at KLO once.

Yes, they certainly do. Also to Boracay (from Manila). Was a first for me!

They do that on all ATR flights as far as I know. Happened also on CEB-OZC.

Then let me clarify: they don't weigh carry-on baggage for routes operated using A319s and A320s. Naturally, 5J will be particularly strict about weight limits for ATR flights. PAL is the same way with PAL Express flights, though not so much as Cebu Pacific, as far as I know. Zest on the other hand doesn't weigh, based on the experiences of my relatives who shuttle back and fourth between Manila and Marinduque on the MA-60.

So if you know the rules why do you complain, in future better to weigh your bag before you fly

Because in one case the excess was 1kg. The other case the excess was 2kg on a 3 person checkin (.67 of a kg per person). When you see the scales and realise that they are often very old, then it becomes an issue of accuracy and "within allowable error". Plus, home scales can be out as well. At the point when we are talking about being a tiny bit over. I do believe it is reasonable to allow an extra 1kg per passenger.
On another note: In Cebu, they always ask me to stand on the luggage scale with my carry on so they can weigh me and record it. This is for the ATR72 Cebu - Cagayan de Oro flight.

so I guess you have to travel lighter to be safe.

I don't see how this is relevant. The Consumer Act of the Philippines requires that all weighing scales be calibrated and tested every six months, and when done so, the provincial, city or municipal treasurer seals the scale. Scales are also supposed to be continuously inspected by local authorities. There are penalties for violating any provision of Title III, Chapter II of the Consumer Act, which is relevant to weights and measures. So even if those scales were old, they should still remain reasonably accurate given that they are calibrated on a regular basis.

I would hope so but I am afraid I do not have the same faith in the "system" as you do. While I love the Philippines, being "exact" is not one the strong points in my experience.
and yes, all the taxi meters are tested and sealed and in perfect working order as well.
hehehehe!
Anyway - I just have to live with paying my P100 - how you say? I am cheap bugger :)
