how come air nz is not having any airpoint dollars promotions lately? are they doing very well under this global recession? ( i know they are not)

as far as i know, SQ and TG are both having/or had very attractive promotions for their loyalty program, eg redeem one get one free, 25% off regular mileage when using miles to redeem flight upgrade...ect

air nz not considering doing any of these big promotions?

Um! why would you, when at the current time you make the top profitable airlines list. Not many other airlines can say that about them self.

Plus when it comes to airpoints NZ is know not to be a charity case unliked us based airlines.

SQ have been offering a number of promotions recently - including selling LHR-AKL in Y for less than the cost of the fuel actually required for the flight. Promotions such as those mentioned are not necessarily a sign of financial health.

How do you figure that exactly? If the plane has empty seats anyway, the marginal additional fuel required to carry an extra passenger is quite small. Thus even a very cheap fare would actually increase the profitability (or reduce the loss) made by the airline on that flight.

On the other hand, I just bought a round-trip from STN to Germany on Ryanair for a grand total of £6 incl taxes & fees - less than even the air passenger duty that RyanAir must pay to the govt. How that one works, I'm not quite sure :)

If not mistaken, the last Airpoints promotion was the 50% bonus run on the AKL-SIN before they shortly closed the route.

Xiaotung - there have been some others since then. In recent times the most common offer is bonus airbucks for buying a holiday (ie accommodation + flights).

Many times over the last 3years there has been promotions where you earn A10 on a "Tasman Supper Saver".
