No attack here, just surmising a question. Seems every one of your responses comes across as snarky. While we're on TOS though, isn't there one about posting padding and posting things that are off topic? This thread is about how to earn a quick 500 points (this hotel also offers 500 points for declining housekeeping services by the way, seems they are good about handing out freebie points) and not whether or not the merits of Facebook deserve joining the site or not.

Too bad 500 points isn't worth signing up for Facebook.

Signing up for Facebook takes about 30 seconds. Considering an SPG point = 2.5 cents:

500 x .025 = $12.50

$12.50/30 seconds = $0.4167 per second

$0.4167 x 3,600 seconds/hour = $1,500.00/hour.

Wonder how much you made per hour posting 25K+ posts to FT? Surely, it's not $1,500/hour. :)

500 x .025 = $12.50

$12.50/30 seconds = $0.4167 per second

$0.4167 x 120 seconds/hour = $50.00/hour.

Now I do earn more than $50.00/hour in my full-time job, but for a simple leisure activity, I will gladly accept $50.00 per hour.

Wonder how much you made per hour posting 25K+ posts to FT? Surely, it's not $50/hour. :)

But how much more of your time will it cost you AFTER you sign up for Facebook? You haven't factored that into your calculations. :D

The Facebook page has been up since sometime in July. When I visited it on Friday, they had accumulated about 650 fans in those 2 months. Now, Monday morning, the fan count is 1056.

If this was advertised on the in-room TV, then my guess is that they match up the fans to previous guests, and only those who have stayed will get the bonus points.

I don't know about that. If there are 400 fans receiving 500 points, that means the Westin Charlotte is awarding 200,000 points. I have no idea what a hotel has to pay for a point, but even if it's only half a cent, that's still $1000. Maybe that's chump change to a large hotel, but I might still be a little perturbed about losing that much so unexpectedly. It was a rather obscure promo obviously meant for guests staying at the hotel.

Regardless, I give the Westin Charlotte major props for following through with this. The next time I go to Charlotte, the Westin will be the first place I will look.

I'm not singling anyone out and will admit that I think it's very important to keep one's word, but... People who neither suffer any inconvenience nor contribute to a benefactor, then complain, threaten or become accusatory in tone when said benefactor doesn't jump to meet their schedule with a free gift seem particularly sad and petty, at least to me. The Westin Charlotte made a good faith offer, undoubtedly under the guise that it was for existing hotel guests. If they honor our unsolicited requests for points, then kudos to them, but I can't imagine having the b@lls to demand the points for doing nothing more than friending them on Facebook when I never even stayed. Of course, if you were at the Charlotte Westin and saw this promo with your own eyes, you are excluded from such judgment. Otherwise, you took a chance that probably wasn't offered to you and...que sera, sera.

Well, I have heard nothing yet as well. But as my initial email confirming my fandom included my SPG number, I'm not expected to hear from them before the points post. Since Cheap Elite received an email that the Westin Charlotte plans to post the points for this promo, that's good enough for me at this time. They could buy friends for 15 cents each of they wanted to. They wanted to make an offer to past customers since they are significantly more likely to need a hotel in CLT in the future than a random person on the internet.

I go to Charlotte once in a while and I am a relatively new SPG PLT (well, I was one in the past and this is my second year back as a PLT). Like I said, I'll simply stay somewhere else unless someone says that the TV offer said that only those staying at the hotel would qualify.

I'm 100% serious when I say that I'm sure you're a lovely person. We've all got our little quirks, values and idiosyncracies and it takes all kinds of us to make the world go 'round and keep it interesting, but...I'm also at a point in my life where I've lost what little filter I've ever had, so all I can say is...
You are definitely right, though, we can all make business decisions and I am a very big supporter of voting with your feet/wallet, so if not getting the 500 points from the Charlotte Westin for this matter is an issue for you, I would support your decision to choose a different property if you're ever in Charlotte. Do I need a stay every year to keep the account active?

That is what the Terms and Conditions say, but a simple "stay" transaction once every 12 rolling months will suffice.

Is there any other way around this? I will not be staying at a Starwood property this year...

I would dine at an SPG-participating property's qualifying restaurant venue then. Be sure to spend >$10 before taxes. That will show up as a "stay" transaction. So will using the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express. (MBNA also, for awhile longer.)

EDIT: It shows up under recent activity so it should, right?

Not all "activity" is equal to "stay" activity. Some activity is posted as "bonus activity, like this one was. It has to originate from a hotel source as a "stay" transaction to keep an account active or be a charge from Starwood co-branded credit card to keep an account active and your Starpoints from forfeiting.

IIRC, the following activity keep your account active:
- paid stays
- charges of $10 or more in an eligible Starwood hotel restaurant. (If you can charge food from that restaurant to your room if you were staying, it should be eligible. Also, hotel may or may not be able to post points for you. Most likely, you will have to send SPG a scan of your receipt)
- points from activity on your AMEX SPG credit card

...not sure about bonus points though. I will try to find the relevant thread and include it here.

Does anyone know that phone number for the State's Attourney's Office in Charlotte? It seems everybody got their five hundred points but me, and that simply won't do! Since I was obviously singled out, I think I can get a discrimination suit out of it, too, sue them for 5,000,000,000 Starpoints! That will teach them to not offer something to me, then not deliver! (I was, of course, just being colorful when I expressed apathy on the matter earlier). This is an outrage. Dig up and reanimate Johnny Cochran and let's do this thing!

(But, seriously, I didn't get any points, so don't feel bad if you didn't either, just smile and move on...):D

I guess if you contact the state attourney, you could make a request for 5 billion starpoints.

Sidebar question, since we already went there: does an award stay with no incidental charges count as "stay activity"?

No, but if there were eligible incidental charges reported for an award stay, it would.

LOL! Yes, I appreciate that it must be frustrating for him(?) to read the same queries over and over after all these years, but when I read some of his responses, I can only imagine that he's typing with one hand while shaking his other fist out the window at those kids in his driveway...:D

No, I'm usually throwing bricks! I inspire to become the "mean old cranky man" on the block. In about 40 years.

Besides, I live in NYC, the domestic staff takes care of the undesirables!

So you continue to equate deciding on a property based on something like this to a ranting demand for 5 billion StarPoints. I haven't ranted, nor has my blood pressure gone up a single point. I simply stated that I would stay in a different hotel in CLT if they didn't send along the points. They should be thrilled to get such a marketing opportunity so cheaply, quite frankly. I'm amazed that people would take offense at such a thing.

I eliminate hotels for a lot less. Inadequate gyms (good elliptical machines are a must) and poor internet are tops on my list.

No matter, the points posted today.

Continue? I believe this was the first such facetious reference...and I was just being colorful. ;)

To be fair, I recall, you did not "rant".

They should be thrilled to get such a marketing opportunity so cheaply, quite frankly.
I'm sure they were positively delighted and ever so grateful for your magnanimous contribution to their success and bottom line!
I'm amazed that people would take offense at such a thing.
I can assure you, offense is not the sentiment I feel... :(
I eliminate hotels for a lot less. Inadequate gyms (good elliptical machines are a must) and poor internet are tops on my list.
So an inferior gym and poor internet are worth more to you than the equivalent of $12.50 in proprietary dollars? I wonder where things such as proximity, efficient staff, cleanliness, safety, value, etc. fall... I believe, sir, that "I've got your nose!" :p
No matter, the points posted today.
Well, thank heavens that there was a happy ending to this story!

While sentiment like the above abounds on this forum and it's not RichMSN's fault that we don't see eye to eye on this single issue, I think I will coin a new acronym in light my just having crossed the threshold of empathy:
BEREFT -

Boorishly
Entitled
Remark
Expressed on
Flyer
Talk

...The double entendre is intended.

BEREFT! Look for this one word response on a thread near you!
