All the are the cheapest possible hotels in the cities I'm staying in and doing hotel hopping each night as needed. Would have liked to stay in Phoenix or LA and just hop back and forth but I do have a life and my family is in Chicago).

day 1 4 points LAX 74.15
day 2 4 points Tempe 90.54 VJ MILEAGE RUN SEMINAR
day 3 4 points North Phoenix 54.73 VJ MILEAGE RUN SEMINAR

day 4 using last 2 free nights at W Chicago City Center 2 rooms

day 5 4 points Chicago midway airport 102.71
day 6 Sheraton Chicago Northwest 119.66
day 7 4 points LAX 74.15

6 stays / 6 nights

I think it comes out about $515.94 for 12 stays (with doubled stays) and that is EXACTLY what I need to rise from a first time Gold to a first time Platinum.

I set a goal to achieve Plat and will be excited when I get there in a week.

I'm going to do a run during an upcoming stay in Shanghai.

Has anyone ever done a back and forth b/t the Sheraton Pudong and 4pts Pudong? Is it allowed to stay one night at one hotel, one night at adjoining hotel, and then back another night to original hotel?

I'm planning on doing LRM, Westin Bund, Sheraton Hongqiao (yuck!), St. Regis, Pudong Sheraton, and Pudong 4pts.

Of course it is allowed to hotel hop. No worries there at all. Remember to wait for the 500 point CCC website to open to maximize your points upon booking.

It's going to be a brutal winter for me. Need to do hotel hopping & matress run for total of 11 stays.

I am not on the stay count double promotion but going to the "Night/Stay advance" promo.

Only 79 stays so far this year so no need for mattress running. :D

I'm a GM right now and pretty far away from Plat so the double stay credits might not be worth it, but I'm wondering what everyone thinks regarding the CPP if I were to book a room at an airport location for a long layover in LAX and only use the room for a few hours. Let's say the rate (incl tax) was $80 and I was given 1000 bonus SP and the usual 3x for a total of 1240 SP's.

Is it worth the outlay of $80?

Next week -
Newark Airport Marriott

I'm not sure the Newark Airport Marriott will net you any stay credit for SPG :p or that suffering the Newark Airport Sheraton is worth a stay

I have the following booked for October. Have been Gold since 2006, but after these I'll be just 3-4 "double stays" away from Platinum for the first time :)

Sheraton Munich Westpark €110 (Executive room)
Four Points Panoramahaus Dornbirn €85 (incl Breakfast)
Four Points Brauneck €65 (incl Breakfast)

All these are cancellable rates in case something comes up.

Just requaled for Gold, so I'm pondering a bunch of stays at the Ontario aloft to possibly get me to Platinum ... maybe a couple at the W Westwood and one at the Westin Las Vegas to vary things a bit. :-)

Back and forth between Mahwah and Parsippany Sheratons for the next few months. 1 night at one, one at the other, rinse and repeat.

I've got only 9 stays so far - 1st year SPG member and leisure traveller here :)

Will be doing 2 (expensive) stays in Europe next month when I go on a European holiday, 1 stay in Singapore and 5 stays in Malaysia.

Is plat really worth it? My impression so far for the suit upgrades is "don't expect it" and "it's a pleasant suprise" if you do get it.

Yes, it's worth "it". The question is, what is "it"? Would I spend thousands of Dollars for Platinum? No. Do I accept the inconvenience of changing hotels all the time and staying at *W hotels even so other might be better? Yes.

+1 on your comments. I wouldn't do any type of mattress running if it wasn't cheap. I want to earn the most benefit for the least as a leisure traveler. I almost always travel alone thus hopping hotels is no big deal to me, since the benefit (platnium) far outweighs that inconvenience.

Since I didn't spend thousands to achieve my status I won't feel overly disappointed if every stay doesn't result in the presidential suite etc.

All told I'm probably in the neighborhood of around $1500 for my 25 stays (using double stays promo 6 of those) to achieve plat. Not living in an area where you can get the $50 4 points with regularity it cost me more than I wanted to but I'm going to achieve my goal of platinum for the first time.

I was able to get BRG rates at LAX Gateway Sheraton (I think about $89) and Ontario Sheraton (approx. $84) - while a bit higher than I'd pay for a true MR, I love the 2000 BRG Starwood points for each stay. Normally, I might do MR's at Aloft Rancho Cucamonga, but always prefer a BRG bonus. That said, with one more stay we're at Platinum for 2010, and then we are done chasing Platinum - it turns out we do more MR's than actual stays, in order to get Platinum, so, reviewing the budget and our commitments, we'll let this status go after next year......

When you do a mattress run do you actually stay at the hotel? Can you call and have them check you in?

No, you have to physically go in, check in with your ID, and you can turn in your keys right back. No need to go inside the room.

Turn your keys in??? I usually just check in at the front desk, then walk outside and toss my key card in one trash bin and the room number envelope in another

I prefer not to add to the plastic trash and often ask them not to even print the keys! They understand what is going on!

How do you find dates that have good prices for doing a matress run? I live near LA so I have plenty of options I just wish I knew a way to see more then one days rate at a time.

Sheraton Pleasanton - $73.52 AI
Sheraton 4 pts $79.03 AI
Sheraton San Jose $92.57 AI

I always make sure to use the AA rate and also make sure you are registered for the 1000 miles bonus!

The 4P Phoenix Metrocenter North has some great a/p rates of $55, something like $58 all-in, and the weather in PHX is quite nice at the moment. You get 250 point plat amenity, plus 1000 points through the end of November, plus whatever bonus you signed up for.

Plats get coupons for two free drinks with gratuity and tax included at the bar, and a coupon for buffet breakfast in the morning. Not sure what golds get, but I have seen them get something more than just the keycard.

I've not received any upgrade here, but the staff are friendly.

Note that the room cleanliness can be an issue - my last room had mucus smeared on the wall by a light switch and hairs on the toilet.

Location is not luxury by any means but convenient - a mall is within walking distance along with a ton of restaurants and shops, and there is an amusement park/mini golf? just down the road - perhaps 1/4 mile away.

For people that don't get to Phoenix or Denver, the Sheraton Suites Elk Grove Village (near Chicago) has a great rate for Thurs-Sat night stays -- $69/night prepaid.
Must book through link under Hotel Offers.

Has free parking, location right off the highway.. and altho there's no lounge, I received a coupon for free buffet breakfast (I'm guessing Plats only).

Note: even better with the new sale ending Nov 10 -- only $59!

4P in Koln and Dusseldorf. 3x2 stays for a total of 157-171 Euros, excluding incidentals. Not the greatest bargains in the world but still not to be sneezed at and I reckon it's hard to beat right smack in Europe. Neither participates in the 1000pts/stay bonus but I'm going for bang for the buck within the shortest possible distance from Paris.

was here for a quick mattress run late Sept when the rate was $48 (around $52 AI). Upgraded to Suite pre-arrival (as shown on SPG.com) but told the front desk i was there for a couple of hours and didn't need the suite, or the coupons (had a late flight out)

I know it's hit-or-miss and completely hotel/check-in clerk dependent if you get multiple stay/night credit for more than one room at the same hotel on the same night. (Recent trip to Asia - 3/4 I got double stay/night/point/Plat Amen credit; 1/4 had to fight just to get the points for the other room).

Wondering if it's acceptable to do MR's in multiple hotels on the same night? Meaning I'll book legit reservations at more than one area hotel, physically go and check in, but then just go home. Seems like I've done everything right and honestly - but will the system reject it for some reason? Will I violate the T&C's somehow?

HMMMM I don't know if anyone has ever thought of that. Oh wait yes they have). I think every savy hotel guest has at some point.

The answer is it could happen but SPG prohibits this from happening since you can only be staying overnight in one hotel.

The flip of this is using day rates and checking out of one and going to another. This is allowed and should credit appropriately provided it is in a different city.

With the new LTO promotion I'm using the next week for a mattress run mixed between the following properties in the DC area:
-Aloft Arundel Mills
-Sheraton Herndon Dulles Airport
-Sheraton Premiere at Tyson's Corner
-Aloft Dulles Airport North
-Sheraton Crystal City
-W Washington DC (for fun)

Most rates were in the 69-79 range, a few at 55, and a few close to 100. Obviously the W is a little bit more. Total cost should be about $650 for the remaining 10 stays I need for the year.

Lol so 10 stays with the double stay promo to requalify. It's been a slow travel year.... And yes, I'm very excited about the bonus Starpoints!

I have 16 stays booked for the rest of the year, but just wanted to reach status and get it out of the way, and it was easy to schedule in the next two weeks.

I dont have a lot of choice.....I have to run in SYD . Best deal I could find was $160 AUD (so I guess that makes me a PLAT heavy perhaps :D, cost wise at least).

I did a run at LAX for about $70 - that has been my cheapest stay ever ^.

The rest were vacation stays (with some hotel hopping) and ranged from $95 USD (special rate) to $259 AUD. Best stay was Sheraton Waikiki at around $170 USD per night (loved that place).

I imagine that they'll be staying at those four points places. I do hope that they stay in them after getting the cheapie plat status.
