View Full Version : Any bars at DOH?

I have a seven hour layover at DOH on the way back from Muscat to Manchester in October. All the information I can dig up on the place suggests this is a dry airport. Am I looking at seven hours without a G&T?

For this length of layover, I'm reluctant to look at a hotel because I don't think there's be much actual sleep time once I factor immigration, customs, taxi to hotel, taxi back to airport, security etc......

The premium terminal offers alcoholic drinks (except during Ramadam at least, actually wonder if they will serve any this sunday early morning ) . 7 hours should give you time to head to the bar of the closest airport hotel and enjoy a couple of drinks ( though I've never tried)

Last time I went through DOH during Ramadan that wasn't a problem either. They fetched a beer from the back somewhere.

Anyway, the OP mentioned in another thread that he would be flying Y in which case there is no such thing as the Premium Terminal for him.

In the regular terminal there is only a dry-bar (and the word "bar" would be a compliment for that canteen like dump). The only chance for him to get a drink would be to buy himself into one of the lounges which offer access against a fee.

I have access to the Oryx lounge through Priority Pass but this appears to be a dry lounge....... Still it would be a more comfortable surrounding that the terminal for a few hours.

The Oryx lounge is actually nicer than both of the Qatar lounges. I usually hit the Gold lounge tocheck out the day's food and then wander over to Oryx with my Priority Pass for the duration of my wait.

They don't have alchohol on display and I've never asked if they have it in the back. One great thing they do have is keyed lockers. If you want to drop your carry-on and take a short (really short!) walk around the duty free area this helps.

This brings up the question: How many airports (the airports themselves; airport clubs; or airport hotels) are dry 1) all the time or 2) during Ramadan? :( A listing would be useful.

You can dig through this thread from the other mid-east and Africa airlines forum:

Not sure if there is another similar thread elsewhere.

Thank you Dmunz, that is an excellent thread. I didn't realize so many frequent flyers took that all important G&T in the air (and on the ground) so seriously.

I don't know if the attendant that served you has been understanding or following the directives . I didn't insist but was denied alcohol a few minutes ago as well as last week in the lounge . Was told that would start serving again in a few hours.

If you are travelling Y class there are no bars.

I once had a long layover at Doha (I am a Silver Card Qmiles Member) and went to the Silver Longe. This loung is dry, but I asked the girl on reception and she supplied me with three cans of Heineken after about 60 minutes as a favour.

Maybe you should buy a 1/2 bottle of gin at duty free downstairs and add it to soft drinks in the lounge.^

Careful with that sort of advice...... If the the place is not licensed for drinking, the local authorities may well have your b***s if you're caught :D.

And a big hello from the Oryx lounge in DOH. Alcohol is not on dispay here but if you ask at the kitchen, they will bring you out a can of beer (at least at this time of the day).

Yeah, it's a shame that DOH is a dry airport, except some of the lounges. With a seven-hour layover, you could take a taxi to a hotel anywhere in the city (to the Marriott, Sharq Village, or Movenpick if you want to stay close to the airport) and hang out at a bar.

Good idea. I doubt that you would have any trouble if you were discreet.

They generally have more than just beer -- but rather a full range of relatively low-end alcohol, e.g., Johnnie Red, some type of vodka, brandy, etc. They are sitting in the kitchen; sometimes you can poke your head in to see the bottles and choose, or just ask the attendant.
