Gulf Air has a nice benefit with access to their lounge with Silver status as well as the increased baggage allotment to 15kg more than general members receive which is GOING UP BTW. Thus as a Silver I get 45 kg in economy which is quite a bit less than I get as a Star Alliance Gold member which is 3 bags up to 70lbs each. Thus it catches them up somewhat but not quite there.

CHECKED BAGGAGE
We have increased our weight based checked baggage allowance by 10kg for Gulf Air operated flights departing from 01 October 2009. This now means we have one of the world’s most generous baggage policies
Checked baggage allowances on tickets issued wholly on Gulf Air operated flights – total weight:
* First Class passengers: 50kgs (until 30 September 2009 - 40kgs)
* Business Class passengers: 40kgs (until 30 September 2009 – 30kgs)
* Economy Class passengers: 30kgs (until 30 September 2009 – 20kgs)
If you are a Gold or Silver member of the Gulf Air Frequent flyer programme, you also receive an additional baggage allowance over and above the applicable allowance for your journey, free of charge. This will be handled at the airport Customer Service staff when you present your card. The extra allowance when travelling with flights operated by Gulf Air is:
* Gold – an additional 20kgs
* Silver – an additional 15kgs
Certainly the lounge access is nice but the redemptions are not that good. The cost for redeeming for free flights is VERY high in my opinion as are the upgrades. Thus I use them to get around in the middle east and get to Asia but would never use them as my only carrier seeing as their redemptions are not favorable.
No incentive to climb above silver IMO as I get 25% increased mileage now and get 50%. Knowing that you are accumulating miles for VERY high redemption values who cares. I will keep silver to get into the Bahrain lounge and increased baggage allotment, but no incentive to go for gold as there are no more upgrade opportunities.
