Starwood Preferred Guest - Cute little SPG Plat touch at check-in

Experienced a bit of cute misdirection at check-in, this week. Even though it was less than 100% honest, it didn't make me angry, just gave me a chuckle and I thought I would share.

As I always do, I checked my "stay details" online before I checked in. In this case, I checked online only minutes before, and saw that I was likely getting an upgrade to a suite. I went to reception, and the person there said, "Okay, I have you in a [standard room with 1 king bed]". At this point I thought that I was getting screwed out of my upgrade, but didn't say anything. He then said, "Let me try to work a little magic here, since you're a great Platinum member"...clickity-click-click..."I've upgraded you to a [suite with two bedrooms - the exact room I knew I was already assigned]." "Wow! Thanks so much!" I exclaimed.

This just seems like a lack of maturity on the part of the agent that checked you in. They could easily have said, "I see you booked a Standard Room. Since you are a great Platinum we/I have been able to upgrade you to ..." I would likely have joked with them about it.

Serious Question: what do you mean by "stay details"? You can actually see that you are upgraded (if you are granted one) hours (or minutes) prior to your stay?

You can (often) see if you are upgraded, even days before. Just login to your SPG account online, go to the section with upcoming stays, and you can see "Hotel details" or "Stay details". Oftentimes, the stay details will show your upgraded room.

It's been discussed countless times here, and I'm sure that the Lurkers will appreciate my mentioning that just because you see an upgraded room there, does *NOT* mean you will get that room. Things change as people check-in, and you are not "entitled" to that room, even if you see it there.

Do as aviators99 says and check the details of the room your booked. So for instance you may have booked a Standard King and then see that your Room Features shows Deluxe Club King or Cool Corner Suite or whatever. Also as noted, this can change again by the time you check-in.

I got the same treatment at LM San Francisco. I knew I was getting a better room than normal (there were 2 changes to my reservation, but the desk clerk told me that I was getting a normal room) -- "no, wait, you are getting something special". I got a better suite upgrade than normal. Nice little upgrade and game....
