Taking the YYZ to LAS flight (listed plane as a 737-700) and asking where the best row/seats are for viewing out the window.
I plan on using WJ's seat selection before the flight. looking for any input from you helpful folks. There are 4 of us travelling.
thanks;)
Also, am I allowed to bring sandwiches (ham or roast beef) in my carry-on aboard a transboarder flight.

The seats that are farther forward don't have the wing blocking the view... but be warned, there's a row on 737s that have no window. Check seatguru (http://www.seatguru.com) to find out which row it is. They also have good recommendations for which rows are best/worst. Also remember which side of the plane will have the sun for the flight - the glaring sun can become really annoying after 4 hours! (It's in the south sky until next April)
As for the sandwiches, I don't know. You can try calling US Customs and Border Protection. They may have restrictions on what kind of meat can be brought into the country. (there was a time where you couldn't bring roast beef because of the whole mad cow thing, but I think that's passed).

I think US immigration just generally frowns on meat and fruits/vegetables at all. And security might not like somebody bringing a sandwich through because they might be trying to smuggle toothpaste in it or something.

i believe it is row 8F that has no window on the -700.
As for viewing anything rows 1-10 are the best. Row 1DEF or 2 ABC you have a little extra legroom due to them being the bulkhead seats, however the armrests are stationary and the traytables are inside them. Also you don't have someone reclining in your face.
AVOID 10 DEF (they don't recline)
11 DE No Recline
11 ABC No Recline
24 DE No Recline
(rows 22-24 are very close t othe aft Lav as well)
The rows ARE staggered, 3x3 configuration, so basically the row doesnt go straight accross
like so
DEF 1
2ABC
DEF2
3ABC
DEF3
4ABC
DEF4
And so on and so forth
Seats 2C and 1D i believe arent available for purchase or seat selection online as they are restricted to ABP (able bodies passengers) no casts, braces, crutches, canes, weelchairs, children under 12 and such due to the fact in an emergency you may be required to assist.
Anything behind row 10 you have the engines in the way, the wing ... and the jet blast from the engine (because of the heat) will blur your view when youre looking directly down.
row 1 DEF is the best because yo uhave one window right next to you and one window just in front of you that isn't blocked by another seat as well!
AS for sandwiches... YES! You can take them through security! However since you will be Pre Clearing US Customs before departure there is a chance they can be taken away from you.
GUIDELINE FOR FOOD PRODUCTS!
(keep in mind these are guidelines, and are enforceable above and beyond at the discretion of the Customs officer!)
FRUIT: Bannannas are allowed, Melons including Cantaloupe, Watermelon and Honeydew must be peeled and all seeds removed, Fruit Cups are permitted. All other fruit is banned
(however, I have had success in taking Mango (peeled, pitted) and sliced apples wit hthe skin and seeds removed as well as oranges that are seedless)
FRESH VEGGIES: Carrots and Celery are allowed. Most veggies are questionable depending on the origin (the sticker) and what veggies are in season in Canada (i've never had a problem taking lettuce for salads/sandwiches thru either)
MEAT:
BEEF - LAMB - VEAL - BISON and all others are prohibited with exceptions are PROHIBITED (this includes prepared foods such as stew, chilli, lasagna, sandwiches** wether fresh, frozen or canned)
EXceptions! Pork or Fish products from canada are allowed, Poultry and Eggs must be Cooked. Raw or Frozen poultry/Eggs are prohibited.
**If you bring sandwiches, ensure they are identifiable. If the CBP officer suspects there may be ANY Beef products in them, then they will be confiscated. I would avoid deli meats such as pepperoni and salami as they may be taken away.
I also havent had much issues in taking Cheese thru either.
declare EVERY food product you have with you. the worst that can happen is somethign gets confiscated.
------------------------
Liquids, gels and aerosols may be brought through security if they meet the following standards:
The container is clearly marked as to what it is and shows how many ML's are in the container and MUST be UNDER 100ML per container and fit in a one litre resealable bag that can be closed.
This includes Lipstick, Lipgloss and liquid foundation as well as mascara. If you carry a lighter i believe they are atill confiscated on the way to the USA.
They wil require you to remove your shoes for USA departures.
Laptops must come out of the case and placed in a bin, on their own for screening.
Remove everythign from your pockets before going thru the metal detector, it is best to remove your belt and any watches or copious amounts of jewlerey to prevent beeping!
I believe that is the most important information you will need to know.
Snacks and sandwiches will be available for purchase on your flight. The sandwich choices will be
Assorted: Ham, Turkey, Salami on a cheese bun
Ham, Bacon and Turkey on a Whole Weat Bun
or
Asian Chicken Wrap (has a teryaki sauce, cabbage, red pepper, chicken breast and a few other things in it)
Snacks are:
Twizzlers, Bottled Water $3, Pringles, Salt n Vinegar Crispers, Ranch Corn Nuts, Tomato or Chicken cup of noodles $2, Snack Box $6 (swiss knight cheese, melba toast, craisins, thinsations, crispy minis, beef jerkey)
if yo uhave ANY questions PM me I am a FLight Attendant So I know a few answers :)

jong866,
I was assigned 5 ABCD. I think that I will keep those seats after looking on Seatguru.
First time on WJ and looking forward to the experience. I will report when I get back.
Thanks to all the contributors.^

I need to book a flight from YYC to YVR and when I look at the seat selection screen, it shows that the front section of the aircraft is unavailable for selection. Does this only become available for online and airport check-in.

You are correct. When i checked in online, WJ had assigned me seats. If you don't like them then you can change to other seats. I was happy with what I was assigned.

These seats open up at the 24 hour online check-in window and can be assigned at the airport as well. If you want a seat in these rows, you must pay for advance seat selection.

5 ABCD were assigned to us for 3 out of 4 legs of our trip and I was very happy with those seats.
Had 13 ABCD from YYZ to YOW. They are over the wing but it was nightime when we flew so it didn't matter. Also it was only a 40 minute flight.

Is the seatguru guide a pretty good one? I got 12B&C on a 73G. 6A&B were free but I thought the EE seats would be better than 1-2".

It might be row 12 that only has 2 seats per side. You might be lucky.

Seatguru is not too bad for WS, although I'd rate 12A as a red seat. 12B&C are among the best seats on the plane, with several extra inches of legroom and full seat padding. 12A is an awful seat with a very thin seat cushion and a very uncomfortable "arm rest" that hits your elbow throughout the flight.

So 12A doesn't exist on some 73G? I noticed that seat was taken well before the checkin window. BLocked just in case it is unavailable?

I think 12A and 12F are the seats that you can pay extra for - that's why they never seem to show up on the online checkin. I assume you can ask for them at the airport if they're not already assigned. I still love 12F - no seat in front is always nice, though the TV screen is so far away!

I might be mistaken,
736 - 600
73G - 700
73N - 800
Missing Seats:
736 - 24F
73G - 24F, 11F
73N - 14A, 14F
EMERGENCY EXIT WINDOW (The seats you'll be spoken to on board aboutthe window)
600 - 10A F
700 12 A, F
800 13 A, F 14 B E
ROWS THAT DO NOT RECLINE
600- 9 ABC DEF, 24 DE (some aircraft 23 ABC)
700- 11 ABC DE , 10DEF, 24 DE (Some Aircraft 23ABC)
800- 13 ABC DEF, 14 AB DE, 28 ABCDEF - on most AC
(whereas the rows on all 600's and 700's that are in front of an emergency exit row do NOT recline, the seats in row 12 on the 800 do recline because the pitch in that row is EXTRA LARGE!!!)
HOW NEW IS THIS PLANE???
700/800
When you walk on board, look to your LEFT right as you're going through the door. Above the jumpseat near the ceiling at about eye-level next to the automated french announcement system box (to the left of) there is a white placard with the a/c registration and Tail Number
a 700's will start with a 2 and an 800's wil lstart with an 8
The higher the number, the newer the aircraft.
With exception to tails 001 - 011 which are 700's but the oldest in the fleet.
tail 201 is newer than tail 011, and the newest tail in the fleet so far is tail 253 (we;re due to receive 254 soon if not already)
The newest 800 is tail 813
600 series aircraft... same rules apply but i forget how many we have so i forget how high the number goes lol!
This is all based on legroom. Except on the 800 13 ABC/DEF do NOT recline.

And remember that our oldest aircraft is just over 8 years old! We keep adding new aircraft to the fleet every few months. So we have a pretty snazzy new fleet!

12A and 12F definitely exist on the WS 73Gs although 11F doesn't.
Either the leather seat is too slippery or the seat cushions are shorter on row 12? My partner thought the AC 321 seat (non-EE) was more comfortable than the WS row 12 EE seat for that reason.

There's usually not much to see out the window because the flights are up above 35,000 feet. There are some interesting desert and mountain regions that might be seen in good weather but getting an aisle seat is usually a better bet - more room on one side and no tripping over people to go to the washroom. (Aside: My experiences with Westjet have been that they are like Air Canada trying to be like Southwest but not getting fully into it. I could go on but until Southwest comes to Canada, it's either Westjet as they are or go to BUF for the real thing.)
