Got my bump up CDW for my rental. Added an additional driver. Does he need to provide his own CDW from his insurance company to be eligible to drive the car.
*** I am not taking any insurance offered by Alamo ***

If you take the CDW offered AT THE COUNTER by Alamo it's not Insurance it is a Waiver of Responsibililty as long as you are not in violation of your rental contract...Read your contract/folder. Agent can explain. It's not a big hairy deal. No drinking/meds/illegal meds/driving where you aren't allowed etc. If you add a driver to your contract they are an "Authorized driver" and if you Purchase the CDW AT THE COUNTER they are covered by the CDW you add to your contract. The main renter of the car (YOU) is ultimately responsible for all authorized drivers...so adding any coverages covers them too as long as they also abide by the terms and conditions of the contract.
ASK your agent.
Coverage added at the Counter is PRIMARY.

Thanks for your response.
Still a bit confused though....
As I am the primary renter of the car I have to provide my own CDW (if I don't want to pay Alamo's high rate for theirs). Through most Canadian insurance companies you can purchase CDW coverage specifically for renting a car (US or Canada). This is a $10, once a year, charge through my insurance company. I have purchased this before for my wife and I for trips to Vegas renting with Dollar and National.
But, we are going with another couple and I have listed one of them as an "additional driver". Of course, he is not listed under my $10 policy because he is insured elsewhere.
So........ my question remains that if he is an additional driver does he need to buy the $10 policy through his own insurance to insure that he is covered with CDW.

That's really more a question you need to ask your insurance company/broker. Essentially he, and you, are not covered through the rental company. In the event of an accident, Alamo will look to you as the "renter" for restitution, not the additional driver. All claims, correspondence, legal matters etc are with the renter only. To protect yourself, I'd suggest calling the company you are purchasing coverage through and see what their terms are. If they only over the policy holder, then you need to make sure (for your own piece of mind) that your friend has coverage, if he is driving a rental car as a secondary driver.
