We are celebrating our 10th the end of September. We were married on a ferry in 25 - 30 ft. seas so we need another adventure, maybe not quite as much as before. Never been to Western Alaska. How are things at the end of September.
Thanks.

How are things? Well, for weather, I took a look at the National Weather Service site for Fairbanks, where they have climate records for a number of places, including Barrow and Nome. It looks like average temperatures in late September are in the 30s.

When I was in Barrow in 2008, being the weather geek that I am, I asked our guide for the polar bear trip when snow usually starts staying on the ground. He said sometime in October.

Here's the NWS Fairbanks site if interested:

Other than weather, September is often a favorable time for watching the northern lights.

I have been thinking about a trip to Barrow this month or next but my contact in Barrow said that they haven't seen polar bears there for at least 3 weeks. Apparently the government is collaring and tagging some of them and are using helicopters to come in so the bears are hard to find. Maybe in a few weeks but he said he had no idea how long it would last.

Unfortunately most tourist things close down early to mid September in most Alaska towns.
