It looks like you get the €40 voucher no matter what (not as an either/or):
Join the A|Club program for free before September 30, 2009 and earn an A|Club rewards gift voucher worth €40!
The voucher, I assume, can be used to discount the value of a future Accor-chain hotel stay by €40.

OK, maybe this is a stupid question, but..... the T&C's say that vouchers can be used at any of the following brands:
A|Club rewards gift vouchers are valid every day until the expiration date shown on the front of the voucher to pay for all or part of the Member's services (including one night minimum) provided by Sofitel, Pullman, MGallery, Novotel, Mercure, Suitehotel, ibis and all seasons hotels, as well as Accor Thalassa hotels.
So if I want to use a voucher at the Novotel Shanghai, do I get it denominated in euros or dollars? Or are we to assume that if you can only get vouchers in euros or dollars that you can only use the vouchers in the US or euro-Europe?
Obviously, I am confused.

Contrary to both the subject line of the e-mail from Accor and the title of this thread, you do NOT receive 60 USD or 40 Euros! Instead, you receive 2,000 points which can be redeemed as (if I understand correctly) partial payment for a hotel night at SOME (not all) of Accor's chains.
That is a BIG difference. You ONLY get value from these points if you stay at one of their hotels. So, they are offering an incentive to 1) join their loyalty program and 2) stay (and pay partially in cash). This is NOT foolish at all -- it's a smart way to gain some new customers, fill some rooms, and generate some revenue.
The only thing foolish about this promo is the misleading e-mail saying "Get USD 60!"
By the way, the e-mail says that the offer is good till September 30.

The 2000 points can be instantly redeemed for a $60 fully transferable voucher, so if your "family" were to all signup and combine the vouchers then you'd have enough for a free night (or more).

This promo seems to be confusing the heck out of people... Its really not all that complicated. The only thing that I have to admit I was confused about for a split second was just where the Promo code is supposed to be.
If one clicks on the link that doublezheng posted just a few posts up notice that the Promo Code "2009BirthdayBonus" is already pre-entered in line for a promo code. This is on the very first page to sign up, ("Step #1") before you even enter your email address. If you've already entered your email address & you aren't sure if the promo code has been applied you may have gone too far already.... But again, if you click on the link that doublezheng posted, you should be all set to go.
On another note, anyone figure out how to make this promo help in Providing a "Hit" for the US Airways "Grand Slam" Promo??? Accor (A-Club) is indeed listed in the T's & C's of the Grand Slam Promo as one of the 10 hotel partners that will count as a hit if one transfers Hotel Points to US Airways Dividend Miles.
It sure appears that the minimum amount of Points that can be converted to US Airways is 4,000 A-Club Points which converts to 2,000 US Airways Dividend Miles. Which raises the question, how can one accumulate 4,000 A-Club Points??? Has anyone been successful in transfering points from one individuals account into another individuals account or along the same lines, if somehow one mistakenly had 2 accounts open, would it be possible to consolidate the 2 accounts into one account with 4,000 Points?" I'm guessing this is pretty unlikely, but just wanted to throw it out there & see if anyone had any thoughts...

Getting a voucher that has no name on it worth 60 USD, valid for a year for every "member" you create is very generous. Plus you can hand in several vouchers at a time. That´s stupid of Accor. I have been long enough on FT to know that many will simply create dozens of these accounts and even sell them on ebay or CC. I guess it won´t take long until someone is selling info for a few dollars on ebay about how to get "unlimited" vouchers worth 60$ a piece. Wait and you´ll see.

I reckon Accor has an idea of what they are doing in a quiet time for business. For every FTer who turns up with enough vouchers for a free room, there will be 5 normal people who take a $60 discount on a $200 room which suits Accor just fine. It will also be far less expensive than Hyatts 30,000 room giveaway from earlier this year.
The only snag, from Accors view, is that I assume the franchised properties can claim 90%ish of the face value from Accor. During the Hyatt promo, I assume franchised properties would just have claimed the normal reward night cash which is usually pretty low.

If your hotel rates are other than USD or Euro's, the hotels will also get a bit back on the fabulous exchange rates that they will no doubt convert the certificates at

according to one poster on a russian forum, who claims to have called the Accor help line, the vouchers (and they are only paper vouchers, not electronic) will be mailed to the members ONLY after any account activity... that is hotel stays, etc... although the exact wording was "As soon as any other elligable points will be posted to your account" .... if only we could get some bonus miles from somewhere else... maybe that would qualify as elligable points :)

Nowhere does it state there must be account activity!!
These are regular vouchers (same as those obtained by actually earning 2,000 points from hotel stays) and once ordered, they shouls ship.

4K points is actually $120 "in Hotels".... but who's counting?
I would not "pay $60" for a US Hit (worth 2.5K Bonus Dividend Miles) and 2K miles on the transfer, but I would gladly trade a few pieces of paper I didn't have a few days ago & only took 10 minutes to acquire for 4,500 US Dividend Miles... But its most likely a mute point as I dont believe there is really anyway to do it without addition Accor activity beyond signing up...

We are going to Tahiti in Nov and I just joined and got 2000 points. The lowest room rate at the Sofitel Tahiti is around $195 USD incl tax. It's an advance purchase rate, credit card charged immediately. How do I use my points for $60 off? I could also sign my husband and other family up for more vouchers if it really is true, you can combine them. Or should we book the Flex rate incl breakfast for $242 USD?
We had stayed at two Ibis hotels within the last 2 weeks, I put in a request for credit but not sure if they will give it since we checked out before joining. One was in Paris and one in Nuremburg. I didn't bother joining as the rates were so low we wouldn't have gotten enought points to do anything. (160 euros all up)

Read the T&Cs for crying out loud. Vouchers cannot be used on prepaid rates, for obvious reasons.
Tiki
Sep 25, 09, 1:12 pm
Theoretically they could if the voucher contains a number or code that is input when making a reservation and automatically deducts the value of the voucher at time of booking. Other hotels such as IHG/PC and SPG offer the opportunity to pay for a room partly with points and partly with cash in advance. Since I am new to this hotel program, I wished advice from people who had used them before. I currently have Le Meridien booked for that night but I could better allocate my SPG points elsewhere and just need a place near the airport to crash before going to Bora Bora (PC redemptions).
So I should book a room category that is not paid in advance, show up at the Sofitel with vouchers in hand and settle any difference in cash on the spot?
pcg2001
Sep 25, 09, 3:30 pm
Hi Tiki, my 2 cents: given that the prepaid rate is 47$ cheaper, you would only be saving 13$ by using one $60 voucher towards the $242 rate (not prepaid), so why not save the vouchers for another occasion? As you mentioned in Ibis, the rate is very cheap (and it is difficult to get heavily discounted rates), so using a couple of these makes a stay almost free, whereas in the sofitel you are actually paying $47 more each night to be able to use the voucher and that eats into how much you save. Sorry if I did not make myself clear... But I would simply save the points for later.

The AIClub rewards gift voucher is accepted exclusively during the period of validity specified on the reverse side to pay for part or full settlement of services (which must include a minimum one-night stay) provided by hotels in the Sofitel, Pullmann, MGallery, Novotel, Mercure, Suitehotel, Ibis and all seasons networks but also by the Accor Thalassa hotels. It is accepted in the Ibis hotels in located in France only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. The AIClub rewards gift voucher may be used at certain partners of the AIClub network mentioned on Accor hotels Loyalty Program - A|Club.
Settlement with AIClub rewards gift vouchers must be done directly at the hotel or at our partner´s point of sale.
Several AIClub rewards gift vouchers may be used to settle the same bill. It is possible to complete payment by any other means of payment accepted by the hotels or the partners. AIClub rewards gift voucher will not give rise to partial or total monetary exchange in any form, including change in cash. It may not be replaced or reimbursed in the event of theft, loss, deterioration, destruction or expiry of the validity date. Either in Euro or in US Dollar, it can be used outside the Euro zone. The currency exchange rate applied will be that of the last workday of the previous month as extracted from the Natixis database "Multidevises". Natixis is a company with a capital of 1955268 310, 40 euros located at 30 avenue Pierre Mendes, 75013 Paris France.

For those of you with large families, how many vouchers is it safe to order at once? I decided to go for 6 x $60 USD for the night in Tahiti, breakfast and dinner, should just about cover it depending on currency rates.

My take is that the fulfilment process on this promo is at least partially automated.
A machine is not going to care about your address and someone stuffing envelopes for a living is probably only marginally more interested.
My feeling is this thing is going to get shut down completely from a high level or it's going to be fine.

It might be a bit different in Australia, I think USA and Canada gets theirs posted out from France. Someone else from Oz said theirs were posted from Australia and since we have a smaller population, it may be harder to fly under the radar. I've done envelope stuffing as part of casual admin office temp jobs and I personally could care less whose name is on the envelope but then there are always those over achievers who would notice. We have an unusual ethnic last name too, but thankfully its a culture which is known for large families.

Your question has been answered at least several times in this thread!
You have to book a non-prepaid flexible rate, which is indeed more expensive than the prepaid. All rates are available online.

A|Club rewards gift vouchers may be used as means of payment for all rates (public and promotional rates) in all member hotels participating in the A|Club Program.
but since the promo rate has to pre=pay.. I have written one of the hotel in bangkok and enquire. they had told me
XXX Could you please make a room reservation through our web site and kindly mention in remark space that your will pay all room
cost by A Club voucher in stead of cut credit card.
And now we have noted that once we receive the room reservation under the name ___________ we won't charge on your credit
card but will deduct with your voucher, however please kindly advise us by return this e-mail again incase of you will going to book
with other name then we can be aware. XXX
Im not so sure are they gonna work or not since once i booked the promo fare I have to let them charge directly at the booking page. Wonder will they really will look at the names & reverse the transaction & let u pay by voucher.
anyway i just post this to let everybody know maybe they can contact the individual hotels beore booking & get the reply with the staff name on it at least anything happend we still have proof of it..

Im not so sure are they gonna work or not since once i booked the promo fare I have to let them charge directly at the booking page. Wonder will they really will look at the names & reverse the transaction & let u pay by voucher.
When I emailed the St. James in London the Res. Manager told me not to book a prepaid rate, as they could not refund the money to my card.
However, as the prepaid rates are much lower than the flex rates, I might try to do what the hotel told you and mention the fact that I want to use vouchers after booking a prepaid rate online. Or maybe, I can make the reservation by phone and the agent can get around the prepaid thing.
We will have to wait and see!:D

I also just got an email back from the same Res. Manager at the St. James, who told me that I can use a voucher in the bar/restaurant without being an overnight guest (great for afternoon tea).
Technically, this is against the terms of the vouchers.
It seems that every hotel is doing their own thing and you have to confirm what it is beforehand.

Pray tell what is the period of validity? One year I am guessing?

Acquiring these certs for the sole purpose of flipping them on CC could be construed as "broker-like" behavior and run afoul of CC rules... beware...
I dunno. I hope that CC gets flooded with them so that I can acquire them for a drink chit each! I'd gladly buy a beer to not have to mess with signing up.
OTOH, if CC gets flooded it means that people are probably killing the deal, and I don't want that either!

So if I understand correctly, this promo starts us off with 2k points in our account. We then redeem them for a 40/60 voucher, which is good for some undetermined amount of time. The points, however, have an expiration 1 year from now. In other words, it seems that the 2k signup bonus expires on 9/30, not the points themselves.
I see that most people are requesting the vouchers right away. But it seems we could wait for up to a year, right? This would extend the life of the voucher. (Of course, they could also kill the deal between now and then, too, however.)
Anybody else not redeeming right away? Just curious if this is a reasonable approach.

I have redeemed most of might right away, but am considering creating some dormant account and requesting the vouchers at a latter time.
It would extend their life. However, some people are saying that when Accor moves to electronic vouchers they might not be transferable. So, when you show up with vouchers for Joe Smith, J. Smith, Smith Joe, Smith S, the hotel might start asking questions!:)

Even that would be unwise as how do they know the voucher isn't going to be used towards payment of a $200 room with the balance in cash? If they cancel all the vouchers, people won't stay in their hotels.
Also remember that Flyertalkers are only a small percentage of their customer base simply because the membership here is mostly USA based and Accor doesn't have many properties in the USA and you can't use the vouchers at Motel 6.

Trust me, Flyertalk did relatively little to kill this deal. I followed this on some German travel sites, and people brag about having ordered hundreds of certs. And then, the deal was posted to some German Fatwallet-type sites, where people ordered the vouchers with the sole purpose of selling them on eBay.
On the other hand, I can't help but laugh every time I see some horribly ill thought-out promotion. Really, what are these marketers thinking? A tech-savvy seven year old could have easily figured out how to prevent these abuses. How about limiting it to one order per address? Putting names on the vouchers? Not allowing the use of multiple vouchers per stay?
I really wish I could be a fly on the wall of the boardroom when they try to figure out what is going on, mere days after having celebrated the 15,000 percent increase in new membership signups this promo has created. :p

Well, it does not take a MBA to figure this out. Someone mentioned here that they had called someone, not sure of the specifics, and was told the voucher would be sent only after activity in the account. In fact, they send out the membership cards after you have stayed in the hotel - I know this because I enrolled with aclub with no points after staying in one hotel and was then sent the card with a meager 200 points. I am sure this measure is to prevent extra costs with shipping cards for people who make no accor activity. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out this would have been the way to go here.
I just hope there is no problem with the already sent vouchers. Or that they won't make life hard in the future for those of us who are actually accor frequent clients.
Funnily this 2000 points promo has already been implemented once in the past (I found this when I was researching the vouchers). I guess it was not as popular.

Very strange for Aussies. I ordered 4 to my home (me, hubby and 2 kids), only one has had an email confirmation and points deducted. Then I ordered 4 others to my Mom's house in the USA (once again a family of 4) and got instant email confirmations and points deducted.
Why are the Aussie redemptions so flakey? Should I keep on ordering them until I get an email confirmation?

They had no idea about exchange rates. They checked with someone on the phone and said they can not accept these vouchers ( because they did not know the exchange rate). I told them that these vouchers are worth 40 EUR each, and then accepted to deduct a total 80 EUR from my balance.

I concur. Setting up accounts for friends and family members who actually exist is OK... but setting up dozens of accounts under fake names out of greed is really shameful. The argument that "I set up only xx accounts and there is somebody who set up 300 accounts" doesn't make it any less shameful.
This sort of behavior is only going to deter marketers from coming up with attractive deals in future.
I am a sucker for deals like this but I always play by the rules and also by common sense about ethical behavior

I received my 40 euro voucher which states "Valid every day except in Ibis hotels in France/ Valable tous les jours sauf dans les hotels Ibis in France" although in the A club T&C the voucher should be valid for Ibis hotels in France for Fri-Sun stays. I only have one voucher since I didn't realize that it was possible to open mulitple accounts/use multiple vouchers for the same stay. I have emailed/ called hotels directly to ask if they had restrcitions about using the aclub vouchers. In my case, I was worried that new year's eve would somehow be an exception. In all cases, everyone replied back saying they accepted.
In your case, given that the Ibis weekend is the only restriction, I would call the hotel or email them.
Yes, 25€ extra at the mercure will erode your savings, but given that you are not able to use the voucher in Ibis, why not stay at a little better hotel? Or save the voucher for another stay? I have found that in one of my stays the non-refundable rate was €30 cheaper than the refundable one, so if I had chosen to use the voucher I would have in fact only saved €10 and wasted €30, so decided to book the non-refundable and save the voucher for another stay.

From the terms and conditions on the back of the vouchers:
The A|Club rewards gift voucher is accepted exclusively during the period of validity specified on the reverse side to pay for partial or full settlement of services (which must include a minimum one-night stay) provided by hotels in the Sofitel, Pullman, MGallery, Novotel, Mercure, Suitehotel, Ibis and all seasons network but also by the Accor Thalassa hotels. Since the Ibis where you would like to stay is outside France, it should accept these vouchers for a stay on any night, not just on weekends. If the terms and conditions don't offer you sufficient peace of mind, contact the hotel directly to confirm that the voucher will be accepted.

Yes, I am sometimes slow and lazy.....
I managed to setup about 15 accounts for this promo. Greedy? Maybe. But oh well. I probably would have set up more, but I got tired of creating new email addresses!
Anyway, I've been cautious about not redeeming too many at once for fear of getting noticed. Ok, and I'm sometimes lazy.
Anyway, I want back in today to 'harvest' some more vouchers, and was surprised to find that 4 of my accounts had ZERO points! When I look in the activity log it shows 2000 points being deposited on Sept 29, but then an 'Account Regularization' on Oct 29 with -2000 points! What the **** is a regularization? Is that French for 'screw you'? This happened to several accounts, and one now ceases to exist. Oddly, several of my accounts still had the 2000 points.
So apparently Accor managed to catch on and decided to do something. Of course, closing the barn after 95% of the cows are out is probably pointless, but whatever.
My advice to anyone with points still in an account is to harvest them soon. Who knows when Accor will just zero out any and all recently opened accounts. And no, I'm obviously not terribly upset about this -- I already got plenty so I shouldn't complain. But I might add Accor to my 'favorite' list of companies like Wyndham, Expedia.co.uk, and BA who have recently tried to weezle out of their commitments. :D In the end though, I'm sure I'll still stay in a crappy Formula 1 sometime, just because I'm that cheap.

The A-Club T&C's do state that there is only one membership per person, and there is a term that allows for immediate cancellation of accounts by the administrator.
This does leave open the question of how they might have identified the multiple accounts, as they would need to have some basis for claiming a breach of the T&C's.
