This Hampton Inn and Suites is located across the street from Daly City City Hall, and close to US Highway 280, on top of a hill. The BART (light rail) station is about 1/2 mile away, a short but somewhat convoluted walk (but there is a free shuttle to / from City Hall and Seton Medical Center - shuttles leave BART weekday mornings approximately every twenty minutes between 6 and 9 AM, and City Hall to BART weekday afternoons (Edgeworth at 91st) about every 20 minutes between 3:08 and 6:24 PM.

The lower floor (of four) includes an outdoor parking lot and two smaller inside parking areas, and once inside, the indoor pool, standard fitness center and meeting room. Elevators take you to the 2nd floor (rooms), 3rd floor (rooms, lobby, "Skyline Room" for breakfasts, and the 4th floor is all rooms. Layout is rectangular, x01 and x02 farthest from ice, vending, elevators, lobby, etc. Odd rooms face 90th Street (some traffic noise can be heard, but it is light,) face north, even face south and the parking lot (less noise.) There are 86 rooms, a few of them King bed studies like mine, and the three "L" shaped "junior suites" x01 at the end of the halls, flanking the emergency stairwells, with microwave ovens.

x25 and x27 are adjacent to the elevator shafts / vending, and x28 and x30 are across from them. x21 are handicapped rooms, as are 230 and 430 (no 330.) The lower the number the farther away from elevators and foot traffic. I stayed on an AARP rate (slightly cheaper than AAA) for $134 + 10% taxes.

This Hampton Inn seems a bit odd, but it is clean and well kept, under the same ownership as the Hilton Garden Inn we frequent in Napa, California. Rooms are large, if slightly bare in appearance, and mine tonight (309) has a king bed flanked by end tables with lamps, and across is a large CRT television on a chest with fridge, a sofa sleeper, desk with usable task chair and lamp with two electric outlets, Ethernet cable that seems to not be working (I am connected to the strong WiFi.) Colors are light textured walls, dark woods and some burn umber highlights. There is a large, padded luggage jack, as well as a folding one in the closet (with ironing set.) There is no microwave, but one can use the microwave in the "Skyline" room. The bath is spacious, if spare, and has the usual Hampton "Purity" branded amenities (tiny soaps, etc.)

Noise is moderate - one can hear people passing by in the hallway, but so far, no noisy guests near my room. The fridge is fairly quiet, and I haven't tried the window-fixed HVAC due to Spring-like temperatures here.

Breakfast is served 6 - 10 AM, and today at least highlighted eggs, bacon and biscuits - we'll see what tomorrow brings. Ah, it brought that Southern specialty "biscuits with sausage gravy" (lots of meat bits in the gravy) and the flattened plastic amoebas with egg yolks that look painted on, as well as a selection of chopped fruit, breads and juices. And a guy in sweats that looked like he was wearing red long johns...

I was greeted at the desk with a colorful sign, signed by all employees, stating "Welcome, Mr. JDiver! Guest of the Day!" Soon after checking in, an employee dropped by the room with a goodie bag - two different meal bars (from Trader Joe's,) a small box of little blue mints, bag of cashew nuts, small pack of "Chips Ahoy!" chocolate chip cookies, two bottles of water, a banana, an apple and an orange, and bags with shoe shine mitt, shower cap and vanity kit. Ah, to be a VIP at the Hampton Inn! ;)

Nearby is a Mr. Pickles sandwich shop and a "Pacific" Chinese restaurant, which I can't vouch for. Farther are restaurants described in the following post, following Junipero Serra northwards, toward BART, approximately 1/2 mile away.

This hotel positions itself as "close to San Francisco," and it's convenient if you have a car (free parking.) Not so much for public transport unless you use bus or can make use of the BART shuttles, or, like me, you can walk a block to my client's venue. It's convenient, and straight Hampton Inn with no great embellishments, or major defects. Prices are often cheaper at SFO properties, particularly at north end like HGI. With baggage or / and children, BART is a significantly longish walk.

I stayed here once a few years ago for one night. I agree in general with your description, except that I do think that its proximity to BART could make it somewhat useful for visiting SF. However, this Hampton isn't necessarily that much cheaper than the Hilton Financial District (for instance).

Also, there are other eating places nearby in addition to the ones you mention -- Fuddrucker's, Cold Stone Creamery, etc. A bit further away, there is a good place called Boulevard Cafe (idine/Rewards Network participant). And farther away (a mile or so), Westlake mall (with some eating places ranging from OK to great ).
