when i picked up my last rental at the dfw car rental center, i noticed that at least one rental car agency was offering a temp toll tag. sign indicated great saving by avoiding fines.
i do not need one, as i have one registered to a car in maryland and carry it to dallas. it is not quite legal, but close enough.
maybe someone can get further information at the dfw car rental center.
The same tolltag works in MD and on NTTA roads?
If your tag is issued by NTTA, you can go to their website and change the license tag that is registered to the tag. You can do this as often as you want, it's free, and immediate. So you can just update the tolltag to the rental car plate number, and be completely legal. I used to work with some out-of-towners who would do this on a weekly basis.
If you don't register the rental car plate number, the tag will still work, but if it does not get read correctly at the tollbooths/barriers, then the rental car company will get billed and will likely charge you a hefty "administrative" fee.
Those without tolltags who choose not to get one from the rental car agency need to be careful: more and more of the toll roads are going all-electronic, meaning there's no way to pay cash. Avoid Highway 121, and the south-most portion of the North Dallas Tollway (below Mockingbird).

i don't know, but i plan to try it now that md is charging a buck and a half a month for having an ezpass.
two or three years ago, i registered my md auto with NTTA. they set up an account and sent me a tolltag. i have used it ever since.
i always use the same rental agency in dfw, and they have never sent me a bill for tolls. also, the light usually turns green.
i carry velcro, and velcro the tag to my windshield.
if anyone wants some velcro, pm me, and i'll send a couple feet of it. i have a thousand yards.

A thousand yards of Velcro(tm)? I have to ask, why?
