Terms and Conditions: Stand-by Fare Rules

1. Standby fares cost $39 one way, per person.
2. Only current tertiary students who produce a valid student ID can purchase and travel on these fares.
3. Standby fares can only be purchased from Air NZ check-in counters at Dunedin or Hamilton airport on the day of travel, and will not incur a service fee.
4. The standby fare price of $39 is valid for all same-day, one-way direct or connecting services to any domestic destination on the Air NZ network.
5. You must register and pay for your intended standby flight at least 90 minutes before the flight departs. Please do not use a kiosk to checkin. If you do not get on that flight, you must return to the counter to be re-listed for the next available flight. Air NZ will determine the priority of standby passengers on a “first in first served” basis for each flight, from time of check-in. If you do not get on a flight that day, you can either elect to get a refund, or you can return the next day and try again.
6. For destinations other than Dunedin or Hamilton a standby ticket for your return journey must be purchased at the same time as your outbound journey. We recommend you purchase this if you need a good deal on a return flight, as these fares cannot be purchased from other airports. Your standby ticket for any return travel must be bought and collected at Dunedin or Hamilton airports on the same day as your outbound journey from these airports and cannot be changed once purchased.
7. Checked baggage is not permitted with these standby fares. Only one carry-on bag weighing a maximum of 7kg is permitted with a maximum combined dimension (length and width and height) of 115cm on jet services and 105cm on non-jet services.
8. Because these fares are for “standby” travel, your purchase of one does not guarantee a seat on any flight. Also, if your travel involves any connecting flights, you may be offloaded at an interim stopping place. Air NZ does not accept any liability for losses incurred in the event of your offloading, although you will continue to be listed as a standby passenger at no extra cost until you get onboard a flight to your final destination.
9. Once you have commenced your one-way journey, you will not be eligible for a refund.
10. If you do not get on board your intended flight at the beginning of a one-way journey, you may elect to receive a refund. You may request a refund at the check-in counter for your outbound journey on the day of intended travel if you do not get on board. This will be made back to the original form of payment. However for any refunds for your return one way journey, an application must be made by emailing your booking reference and payment details to Air New Zealand Refunds at refunds@airnz.co.nz
11. Standby fares are only available from 7 September until 4 October 2009 inclusive. Air NZ reserves the right to withdraw this offer at any time.
12. Standby fares are not eligible to accrue Airpoints Dollars™ nor Status Points, and can not be purchased using Airpoints Dollars.
13. Apart from items 7 & 8 above, where these fare rules conflict with anything contained in the conditions of carriage, the conditions of carriage shall prevail.

How it works

Imagine jetting back home for that special party, or making your mums day with a surprise visit. Whatever plans you have lined up, just make sure you’re at your local airport as these fares are definitely worth the wait.

All you have to do is show up at the airport 90 mins before the flight takes off, ready to board with only carry on baggage (7kgs) and a current student ID. Once you buy your $39 Student Standby Fare, hang around, then 30 mins before the flight takes off we’ll let you know if we can squeeze you on board (if you can’t get on, we’ll either refund you, or try and stick you on the next flight to your destination).

DUD-BNE is listed today, but I don't think that qualifies as "domestic" ...

Yeah I saw that yesterday. I wondered if perhaps they meant to load BHE instead of BNE?

Pretty cool offer for the students (presume is only NZ-tertiary institution cards?) but no airpoints dollars or status points!

I can remember when student standby was available for anywhere in NZ from any airport. It was 50% of the published fare. Airpoints were not invented then. How old I feel ........$100 akl-chc-dud

I also remember the good 'ol days of Student Standby fares ;) One time travelling between AKL and DUD on Ansett with a friend we got offloaded at our connection in CHC. After waiting half the day at the airport and getting very bored watching several full flights go out to DUD we eventually complained loudly and bitterly enough that they endorsed our cheap standby tickets over to Air NZ! Somehow I can't imagine that happening today.

Of course not. It would be a mighty long wait for the next Ansett flight. :p

I think my last student standby was chc-rot-akl on Newman which dates me somewhat I think. A dash 7 from CHC, cold appetizers served from a large tray and a more than 3 hour flight for about $80.

I see DUD-BNE is on the standby list again. I wonder if that is indeed a mistake?

Think all they are doing is being a bit lazy and listing all DUD departures, so every Tue/Sat the BNE flight will appear. Doesn't mean they will let you on it though - would be nice though....

I do rather miss Ansett NZ, I had a few fabulous flights with them. I remember flying their "blue ribbon" service at mealtime from AKL-CHC in about '94 - a delicious hot chicken and rice dinner was served with mini bottle of Montana Gisborne chardonnay (in Y class of course). I do miss those levels of service on domestic flights (I also remember some great breakfasts on AirNZ domestic) - though not the associated prices, of course :)
