Australia, New Zealand & the South Pacific - London - NZ Via HK. Duty free...?
Hi there I have a trip planned for the end of the yeah flying direct to NZ with Cathay Pacific. I was wondering if in my 4 hour stop to refuel etc we are allowed into the duty free area or you are just made to wait in a holding room like when you go through LA?
any help is much appreciated!
cheers

No restrictions - you are permitted to freely roam the airport and shop till you drop!
You will need to pass through transit security - so you arrive on the lower level and will need to select the closest transit point (they are marked) and once you have done this you end up upstairs and in the general departures concourse.
If you miss the transit points along the way there are two final ones right by immigration but these can sometimes have very long queues.
Oh - and welcome to Flyertalk!

I assume you're flying through HK as per your title and not LA?
If you're after goods that are also available in NZ, buy it in NZ, it's likely to be cheaper in NZ than in HK. You can still buy duty free after you landed in AKL. Duty free shops in NZ are available online so you can buy and collect or at least compare prices.
Join the Buyers Club for free at http://www.dutyfreestores.co.nz/Home and get an additional 20% off. However, this outfit doesn't have a store, you can only buy online.

Duty free prices in NZ vary from excellent (cheapest in the world) to dismal (often double the price elsewhere), with generally low end being keenly priced and high end being over-priced. Also selection is somewhat limited (probably 1/4 the selection that you will find in HKG, for example). If looking for something specific that you must buy, then generally best to get it in HKG unless you can buy it on the web in advance.
