Not sure if this topic was covered before. I searched around, but could not find anything. Moderator, please delete if this thread is duplicate. Thanks.

I currently have the Amex HHonors Platinum card and use it regularly. This year, for some reason I spend more than prior years. As of my August statement, I already have about $35K in eligible spending, so reaching $40K is not going to be a problem. I know that the Surpass card provides Diamond status when one spends at least $40K in eligible spending. My question is whether there's a similar 'benefit' of the Platinum card, i.e., will I be upgraded to Diamond after spending > $40K in eligible spending? Thank you.

Nope, you would have to upgrade to a Surpass card. The good news is that if you upgrade your card the previous spend counts.

Also note that its not a real Plat card, they took that wording out officially earlier this year. The only benefit the non-fee card has is gold for 20k. As you get more bonus points for dollars spent with Surpass.

I just got off the phone with AMEX. They said that because the card would be a different account number then I would have to spend 40k from the time of upgrade til the end of the year. She didn't sound too sure of herself, so let me know if that was your situation and if it worked for you.

Thanks

They are wrong. The number will be the same and your prior spend will count. Reference the very long thread in this section.

You can do the application online at www.americanexpress.com and select which card you want to convert. I converted my Amex SPG and the number's the same and spend applied.

That took about a minute and a half -- very easy. Guess I will have a chance of retaining Diamond after all!

Do you mean that you upgraded your SPG Amex to a Hilton HHonors Surpass Amex?

Yep. After Centurion dropped SPG Plat to Gold my staying patterns changed to Hilton Properties. May as well be Diamond there as I stopped spending on my SPG Amex anyway.
