Avis - Given a car unsafe for the roads; Proper compansation?

I'm in town for 2 short days for a wedding. I requested a specific car from Avis and when I got there they didn't have any except one that was just returned. I asked for & was given it and told them not to bother with the exterior wash, as long as it was mechanically sound and reasonably clean inside. The agents were great about it and gave it to me (this location has always been wonderful).

This morning it was raining & I could barely keep the car on the road. I noticed that the two drive tires are almost completely bald (the rubber doesn't come close to Lincoln's head on the 'penny test'). I tried to get 3 shops to rotate the tires before the wedding tonight but nobody could do it in a reasonable amount of time so I tried to do it myself (tires are the same size & lug pattern) but it didn't work b/c of the tire pressure monitor system sensors... the wheels physically didn't fit on the opposite end of the car. It was raining again tonight & I didn't feel safe driving the car, so I had to borrow a car to drive to the wedding. Fortunately, it's not supposed to rain tomorrow for my drive back to the airport.

So, what should I ask for from Avis since they gave me a car that's unsafe to drive? I spent a few hours trying to get the tires rotated (at locations and myself, getting completely filthy in the process). Is it too much to ask for them to comp my weekend? I have pictures of the bald tires to prove my point. I know that the lone agent working tomorrow won't be a manager. Should I plead my case with him or ask him to have a manager call me?

(And I didn't bother calling Avis to ask for an exchanged car b/c it's nearly 2 hours to an Avis location).

I thought they would take better care of a CHM...

You should have called Avis as soon as you noticed the problem. I've had issues with tires before and just called them. They have agreements with several national tire shops. I simply told the agent where I was and she gave me the location of the nearest shop. All I had to do was hand them my rental agreement and they took care of the issue.

I went to 3 tire places & teh shortest time for a tire rotation alone was 2 hours, so I'm sure it would have been much longer for new tires... something I didn't have time for (which is why I just tried to rotate them myself). I was rushed at the airport yesterday & emailed the regional manager. I'll see what happens.

You had to borrow someone elses car to go to the wedding... Why didnt you just leave the car with one of the tire shops and pick it up the next day?

It was a Saturday & none of the local places would have been open on a Sunday (I was in a VERY rural area). I was thinking of this, but there was only 1 set of keys for the car, so I couldn't have anyone put new tires on it and lock 1 set of keys in the car.
