IMHO, as with airlines, if you have status it is generally best to stick with the company you have status with.

With that said, I, to save some bucks, recently rented with Europcar in BCN (downtown beach area office) and was satisfied with the service. Okay, I requested a Mini and got a little Alfa with a six speed trannie that was a lot of fun to drive--would have rather had the Mini but can't really complain, although I suspect they never really had any Minis.

I do not have status with EC but found a discount code on google for "expats" that saved me 15% overall and made EC quite a bit less than Hertz etc when I compared.

EC claimed the tank was full when I rented, but was really down about 11 Euros worth of gas as I found on my way out of central BCN. I was going to gripe about it, but a little mishap occurred, fenderwise, and the office where I turned the car in was kind enough to let it go so I let the gas thing go. Fair is fair... but check your gas level.

I use to rent cars in Madrid Spain. For a cheaper rental you may check with pepecar.com this company is outside the airport and can be reached with a free shuttle to the long term car parking rental. this is a low cost, the price are lower depending on the season but the car may be dirty or scratched and the service is terrible.

I rented from Pepe car in downtown Madrid last year. There were no cars available at any of the majors (it was August and apparently all the cars had gone to the beach--the concierge at the Palace finally located a car at Pepe).

The car was okay, but came with large Pepe car signs on both doors. Kinda like a notice to a thief: "This is a rental, be sure to break-in." However, no break-in--we were mostly out in the country.

And, after the rental a month or two later got a couple of 20 or so Euro charges from Pepe for unidentifiable things that were just rip-off attempts. Fortunately, Amex took care of that.

We did have a lot of fun calling it "Pee Pee" car. :D
