Asia - Cat ba island/Lan Ha bay instead of Halong?

As I continue researching for my trip to Vietnam later this month, I've come across the concept of ditching Halong Bay and the touristy junk trips, to visiting Cat Ba island and Lan Ha bay instead. It seems the later shares the geographic beauty as Halong, but is less known and far more tranquil and off the beaten path. Any ideas?

We're likely going to be going before or after Hanoi. Is doing this equally as possible as doing a 2 day 1 night Halong trip?

This does not repsond directly to your good guestion, but I suggest considering Hoi An.

We are doing Hoi An as well.

Then I would suggest looking at something very different -- Sapa.

How is Hoi An and what is has to offer the same as visiting the small islands of Halong and the water recreation in the area?

Ha Long Bay and sapa are different people environmr t and food. sapa /Black Hmong terraced rice fields beautiful mountains, train travel cool hb, warm, beautiful scenery over the water, fres seasood easier to get to
