Hi, we're travelling from Hong Kong to Sydney on Virgin, Upper Class (with miles) on the evening of 31st December and will be landing in Sydney on the morning of 1st January.
Does anyone happen to know if Virgin mark the new year in the air in any way? I've never flown over the new year before and so I just wondered if there'd be any really tasteful camp celebration!!

Only did Christmas flight before, never had new year flight. I guess they are similar, cabin crews wearing more casual, and nothing special really.
There won't be many passengers though (especially for Christmas), so plenty of space everywhere.
I saw the New Year in on Virgin on a transatlantic in coach. They never acknowledged it in any way. With all the time zones we were crossing, they could have had their choice of times! I was rather disappointed.

CC will be wearing their usual outfits, I don't think they come in smart, more casual or casual options ;).
As for anything special, I think such times are long gone and not only on VS, pretty much any airline - maybe in the old era when flying was special it held true but I recall flying AA to ORD on Christmas Day ten years ago and the CC didn't even bother with a 'merry Christmas' as we boarded (but then that's AA CC for you!).
If I were you I'd order a bottle of champagne to toast yourselves on board and make your own celebration (you can do this on the VS Web site or ring the premier team to organize it).

I flew HKG to LHR on the 31st December a couple of years ago on VS. The flight flight was normal in every way -- nothing special to mark the new year.
One quite cool thing was that by the time we took off it was around midnight. Consequently anybody seated on the left hand side of the aircraft got a pretty good view of the fire works display after we took off from HKG!

I don't mean they were not wearing uniforms, but a few of them wearing Christmas decorations on top of their head :)

How interesting you expect the crew to entertain you as the clock strikes midnight!
As a former Flight Manager, I have acknowledged Christmas Day and Midnight on Dec 31st, but always in a low key way. Not all customers want to be reminded of the fact that it is Christmas Day or NYE.
You also need to remember that the crew that are on board on those two days do not want to be there. Unlike those of you who book to fly on Christmas Day or NYE, your crew have no say in the matter so do you really expect them to be whooping it up for your pleasure and entertainment?
Enjoy your NYE trip,
