From airtran.com:
Oversize baggage rates are based on overall dimensions (length + width + height): $39 for bags with dimensions from 62 to 70 inches (drops to $0 effective October 1, 2009), and $79 for bags with dimensions from 71 to 80 inches. Baggage over 80 inches in dimension (with the exception of some sporting equipment) will not be accepted.
Great to hear that an airline is actually reducing a fee in this day and age. Every US carrier has the 62-inch rule, but in my experience, AirTran is the only carrier that has actually enforced it (many rollaboards and duffel bags are over 62 inches total, length plus width plus height, but I've never seen anyone other than AirTran actually measure bags). Do a google search for "airtran oversize" and you'll see all the complaints and bad PR about AirTran's enforcement of oversize bags. Good move, FL!
