Air New Zealand Air Points - Air New Zealand to introduce Card Payment Fee in Australia

While they claim they are the last to do it, it is yet another fee/charge implemented.

It seems airlines really want people to pay via BPay. I would have thought the time taken to reconcile tickets/Bpay payments would not be worth the effort

http://www.airnewzealand.com.au/aboutus/mediacentre/pressreleases/air-new-zealand-introduce-card-payment-fee-in-australia.htm

Air New Zealand will introduce a Card Payment Fee (CPF) to the Australian market effective for all tickets issued on or after 15 September 2009.

Air New Zealand is one of the last airlines to establish a Card Payment Fee since it was first introduced in Australia in 2003.

The CPF will apply to Domestic New Zealand fares, Tasman and Short Haul Pacific Islands fares and all other International fares sold in Australia. The CPF will be included in itinerary pricing and collected as a flat fee.

For tickets issued in Australia on or after 15 September 2009, the applicable CPF is:

* AUD$3.00 for Domestic New Zealand fares (NZ GST inclusive)
* AUD$4.00 for Tasman and Short-Haul Pacific Islands fares
* AUD$10.00 for all other International fares

These are applied on a per person, per one way journey basis.

Air New Zealand in Australia has recently introduced POLi, an online payment technology which enables customers to pay directly from their bank account and avoid paying a CPF. Customers in Australia who have access to the Pay Anyone functionality offered by a supported online banking facility can use POLi.

BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! :( :( :(

How does one get charged the $3.00 for NZ domestic fares? Aren't NZ domestic fares ticketed in NZ? And if not, wouldn't it be more economical then to just book the fare going to NZ and pay the fee on that, then book the NZ domestic separately? Yes, you'll miss out on "connection" protection, but you could link the PNRs and get some protection that way....

And I guess if anything their charge of $4.00 for Trans-Tasmans is still $3.70 cheaper than QF.

Do what I do - book ex NZ. ;)

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if they start charging here in NZ following the court decisions to allow merchants in NZ to put surcharges on payments made on Visa and Mastercard (and probably other?) credit cards. It is going to be interesting to see what merchants in general start to do.

I noticed this link on the NZ site the other day. It might have been there a while but hadn't noticed it. I wondered if it had been set up so people could still pay direct without paying credit card surcharges.

I hope I'm wrong.

Well, AFAICT before POLi came along there was no way for you to pay for a NZ ticket besides credit card. Happy to be corrected on this one.

So they had to give you another option....or before this unexpected news, "just another way Air New Zealand is making it easier for customers to fly with us."

When they start surcharging for credit cards, it'll be just like home (home = Australia, that is, for me). :(

Oh, and of course they'll have to summarily change the pages which state "no credit card fees" to reflect the new "benefits" of travelling with NZ.

EDIT: Oh, and it seems that if you're wanting to use POLi and escape credit card fees, you'd better not be using Mac OS X......

They figure if we spend extra for a mac we will spend extra to use a visa.

When they do introduce the fee, it would be nice to exempt those paying with a GlobalPlus credit card!

Maybe, but what about us cheapskates who use linux which is not supported also.

How much is MS paying for POLi? BTW I keep thinking its a branch of the police ;-)

I guess its time to reinstall Virtualbox, just after I thought I had gotten rid of the windows.
