I am a 1K on United and have never flown El Al so please bear with me. My sister is flying on flight 28 EWR-TLV this tuesday. I have heard that sometimes El Al will offer paid upgrades for a reduced price to business class at time of check in. It this true? How common is this? If so how much does it usually cost? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi David,
Depends on the flight configuration you can expect on of the two:
1. Business Seating, Economy Service, If i am not wrong its 250$
(you can look previous post of mine here with the exact numbers)
2. On-Board upgrade, where for 700$ she can upgrade from economy to
Business class.
Since its summer right now, Option no. 1 looks possible, She should ask
about it in the check-in.
Thanks,
Ebzed.

Do you get miles for a business class or an economy class ticket if you pay for this sort of upgrade?
And what about if you're crediting the flight to a difffrent FF program than Matmid -- for example, AAdvantage?

I'm not sure if they've standardized it, but in the past I've been offered Business Seating, Economy Service a few times. One time I was charged $250, twice $60 and the other times they just gave it to me complimentary. It's always been on midweek JFK-TLV flights immediately before or after major Jewish holidays.

Just wanted to update with what actually happened. They actually downgraded the plane from a 747 to a 777. Even so they offerred my sister the option for $250. Actually, they did not offer it to her but when she asked about it they allowed her to sit in business for $250. Thank you for everybody's help.

Wow. That's great -- I would happily pay $60 for Business seat and economy service JFK-TLV.
Just out of interest, how do they differentiate you from the other passengers? Do you sit in a separate section from those getting "business class service"?
And do LY do this on other routes, eg LHR-TLV, CDG-TLV etc? Or just on the JFK/EWR-TLV long-haul?

Business has two sections which are divided by a galley. Those in front of the galley are getting business service and those behind the galley are getting economy service. I believe that the First class section is also getting business service.

That's tremendous. I could really care less about the meals and drinks, but would gladly pay $250 for the upgraded seat.
