Budget - Insurances and driving to Canada from USA
Hello guys and gals!
I am deciding a company from which I will rent a car in october, therefor I need some advice...
I found a nice discount code for budge, and am thinking this might be the best option...
I want to rent a car for 10 days in Boston, MA, then drive to Toronto and Montreal, and return it back in Boston.
As I am EU citizen, which LDW, or some other insurances would I need to pay (Is Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) and Supplemental Liability (SLI) "a must" actually? Is the price at Budget listed, the final price with all insurances included or is that paid when I pick the car up?
Can I drive a car to Canada? Would that cost much more?
Sorry for my poor english.
I hope to get some nice answers and tips here,
best regards,
i.

You need LDW/CDW (for the car) unless you have some premium credit card like Amex Platinum. Check that your personal/travel insurance policy have liability (to pay for damage to other persons and/or their property), otherwise you need LIS.
For most Europeans, it's usually cheaper to book rental cars on a site aimed at Europeans with LDW/CDW and LIS included than to add it at the rental counter.
You should have no problems or extra cost for driving in Canada, unless your rental has restrictions for out-of-state driving (Enterprise sometimes states that free milage is valid only in the neighbouring states).

I always book hire cars through my home airline,(BA) that way I know that the insurance cover they offer is adequate, most of them seem to count North America as one , its Mexico they dont want cars taken to, I have driven cars to Canada with Avis and Alamo with no problems and driven from Canada to the US with Avis. you could try insurance4carhire.co.uk for an explanation of what you need

As another "non-American" I can only second the recommendation that you book through one of the European consolidators... (I have used holidaycars.com) and get an "all inclusive" rate that includes CDW/LDW at the very least.. (my travel insurance covers the liability aspects but the CDW IS essential....)
My 2 cents! :D
Hey there,
thanks for all you answers!
I checked at Hertz and used the promo code listed on their site. I got Pontiac G6 or similar for 675.52 USD for 10 days, and all insurances are included by default.
Is there actually a chance to get a cheaper offer anywhere, or is this price "a good price".
I remember renting a car in Ireland last year, and for 9-10 days I paid around 200euros, which was very cheap.
cheers!

Just had a look at that site I mentioned... holidaycars.com...
Intermediate (G6/equiv) for USD$445 for Oct 12-22...
Taking the car into Canada is OK... Mexico is NOT! :D
Please note.. I have no connection with the company! You asked if anyone knew of a better rate.. and I have been quite satisfied with them....:D
(Two 7-10 day rentals in the last 2 months.. ex ABQ and PIT.. both ended up as ALAMO cars...)

holidayautos.de, holidayautos.co.uk etc will give you Alamo (or National) with everything you need. Just decline anything extra or pay-for-upgrades at the counter, all rental staff can identify gullible tourists in seconds. Pay attention to the fine print that comes with your voucher so that you know in advance whether the first tank of gas is included, not included but mandatory to pay for at pick-up, or not included, so you know how to return the car.
Have a nice trip, and do some research on expected waiting times for border crossings!

Ivek,
Like the others have said use the brokers that provide you the deals which include insurances.
Here are some brokers that do exactly that:
Carhire3000.com
USrentacar.co.uk
ebookers.co.uk
UScarhire.co.uk
I strongly recommend you to use them as this game is totally different as compared to an American renting in the US.
Here is a thread with info on carhire in the US for Europeans: http://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=258981
Safe journey.
