Amtrak Guest Rewards - Using a cancelled ticket confirmation code to book a new ticket?

I booked a NYP-ALB trip a while back and cancelled the ticket before traveling. I booked the trip with a Visa prepaid debit card (valid only on mass transit)...that I lost, and it still has a lot of money on it.

I'd like to use the balance on that card (which I can't otherwise access- I don't have the card number or anything) for a new Amtrak trip.

Can I contact Amtrak and just give Amtrak the old confirmation code and they could use that to book a new trip, and it would be billed to the same Visa debit card, without me having to give the number? That's how it would work on airlines if I wanted to re-book a cancelled ticket.

Thanks.

Had you printed the ticket out before you canceled it?

If you didn't print it out (via QuikTrak or an agent, or have it mailed to you), then the ticket was automatically refunded to your credit card.

If you already had a paper ticket, then the reservation was canceled and your paper ticket still has the full value. You would need to mail it in or see an agent to use that credit for a new trip.

I won't swear to you that they can't, but I believe that the agents cannot see your credit card number once it's entered into the reservation. Therefore I suspect that you will be unable to do what you wanted NYCommuter.

I don't think they can see it, but they can certainly use it in some circumstances.

When I called to make a change to my unprinted reservation last month (I was changing a PDX-SEA ticket to SEA-PDX a few days earlier), the agent informed me that she'd have to refund the original ticket and then re-charge it to my card, so I'd see a refund and then a separate charge. She didn't ask me for my card number, however, so it seemed the whole process was automatic by Amtrak's systems.

However, if you've canceled your ticket and it was already refunded to your [now lost] card, I don't think they can access it in the same way and re-charge that card.

Even if they use the card number you gave them originally and don't ask you for it, they will ask for the security code on the card. So if the OP has lost the card, I think s/he is SOL.

I would be quite surprised if the OP managed to do this transaction.

Ah, yes, she did. Forgot about that.
