Some thoughts:

1) Do you have travel insurance? Try claiming through them.
2) Is the ticket a non-changeable/non-refundable one? If not, then try to get a refund or book it for another date. Even if it's non-refundable, in the worst case, the airline is obliged to give you back the taxes (and some airlines also refund the fees).
3) In any case, ask the Embassy where you applied for a visa for a letter stating that the visa was denied. This might help with the insurance and/or the airline.

.

While normally I am the first to advise pax to check with their insurer in this instance I doubt whether it would help . All travel insurance policies I have ever seen have had exclusions for being turned down for a visa , like the airlines , they see it as pax responsibility to organise the visa before committing to the ticket .

Unfortunately , of course , some countries require proof of a return ticket at the time of the application for a visa which puts pax in a difficult position as really the only safe option is to buy a fully refundable fare , but of course these are often priced way beyond the budget of the average traveller .

Change your travel agent to someone who knows the industry.

Zazza 's right. get in touch with AZ. At least they give the airport taxes back unlike some others make it very difficult!

It should be more than taxes alone as per AZ latest press release which you can find on their website.
Anyway alitalia is alive and calling their CC should be enough to get half your money (if not more) back.
