Nordic Countries - CPH to OSL via anything other than plane?

I am flying into CPH 4 days earlier than my conference starts so that my SO can see Norway...I was looking at flights between CPH and OSL, but then I thought there may be some high speed ferry or rail between the two cities...is there, or is plane my best bet if I don't want to drive?

You can go by train, but it's an eight hour journey through three countries. To check your options, go to www.sj.se, click "In English" in the top-right corner and search for trains from "Köbenhavn H" to "Oslo S".

Well, the Danish name is actually "København". You have to type it in Swedish characters, getting "Köbenhavn".

My Thomas Cook rail map also shows ferries between Oslo and Frederikshavn (with a rail link to Copenhagen), but I don't know if you'd gain much time-wise as you'd be travelling almost the whole length of Jutland. On the plus side there are some scenic bits on that trip, especially the long bridge between Nyborg and Korsør.

As the previous posters mentioned, no high speed trains / ferries between Copenhagen and Oslo.
The most easy way to check the train schedules is on www.bahn.de (http://www.bahn.de).
If you choose the ferry ride, the trip through the Oslo Fjord is espessially beautiful.

A nice option in Norway would be to drive around in the country. The nature and wiews are stunning.

Fredrikshavn ferry to Oslo takes 10h, and from Copenhagen is 16h.

Other option is the train to Hirtshals and the colorline superspeed to Kristiansand 3h, and train to oslo, i think its around 4h.

My husband and I thought it was a pretty train ride. We changed in Göteberg.

Make sure you get seat reservations. We were told we didn't need them from Copenhagen to Göteborg and there are no signs on the seats that they are reserved but a lot of people got on at the border and threw us out of our seats.

Go with the direct ferry - it is an overnight ferry ride, which leaves at 5pm and docks the next days around 8am IIRC. Daily departures. The ferries are very nice - and it is a nice ride. Be carefull though it may add up with dinner, visiting the bar, etc.

If you fly direct from NYC(EWR) you will arrive in the morning - and thus if you want to go straigh to Oslo, a plane is the better option. Check

Well, a nighttime ferry seems like a nice way to see things, however it will be dark, so how much can I see? A car ride is also a good idea, but unless we do a one way rental (I checked, and thats $$$$), I have to budget ALOT of my 3 days I have free just for driving between cities...With the flight schedules of the 2 carriers that fly this direct, it sounds like I would have to hang around CPH for a good 3-4 hours between my flight inbound and my outbound...*sigh* I hate it when schedules don't work out.

For the most part nothing. However, but the entry into Copenhagen and especially the last part of the trip into Oslo is quite nice and you will have daylight for that - depending on the time of year.

First, the ferry is out of sight of land except for when it leaves Copenhagen in the afternoon, and when it sails up the Oslofjord in the morning, so you don't necessarily miss much during the hours of darkness. Secondly, depending on what time of the year you are actually travelling, it may not get dark at all.

I think we decided to drive both ways, going up in one day, and coming back stopping in Gothenburg...sounds like about an 8 hour drive each way? The trip is next week, so I figgure not a ton of sun, but not a small amount...

More clouds than sun right now, but daylight from about 6 AM to 9 PM. Oslo is bathed in sunshine after earlier squalls as I write this (7 PM).

This is actually a very nice time of year for driving, but we've had an unusually wet August, so you might have som rain on the way.
