Several Avis locations in Manhattan do not have gas pumps so you get whatever gas in left in the tank by the last customer.
Unfortunately the agents often enter the tank as full without checking the actual gas level(I guess that's the default on their computer system), so it's important you check your gas tank level against your contract before leaving.

They tell you to return the car with the same amount of gas that was in it when you rented. This is almost impossible to do because every car has different gas mileage and tank capacity.

I understand Avis's problem with locating gas tanks in Manhattan, but the result is that many of their customers get overcharged for gas or give Avis free gas by returning the cars with more gas than they received.

just posted in the 75 mile fuel surcharge thread, but rented from Avis in Manhattan (43rd and 3rd) last week. they tried to charge the fuel fee even though I filled up in NJ in Ft Lee and showed the receipt. Nobody would have said anything about it had I not noticed it. I'm sure a lot of people get dinged by this.

Its your responsibility to check the car for what the tank reads. If its less, a simple visit to the counter and they'll adjust your contract.

And if you bring it back with more gas than you started with, they'll actually credit your rental for the difference. It'll go in a column called "On The Road Expenses". It happens to me quite frequently.

And no, they dont let you sell it back to them at the $6.99/gallon that they would have charged you, but at least its something.
