AirTran considers Key West service (http://keysnews.com/node/16231)
Excerpt:
Since talks with Spirit Airlines in the past year have fizzled, two carriers -- one of them a low-cost provider -- have expressed interest in flying in and out of Key West. AirTran Airways representatives on Friday flew into Key West International Airport as part of a test run. The crew flew in a 737 that holds 128 passengers -- the largest plane providing service now carries 86 -- so pilots and executives could get the "geometry of the airport," Monroe County Airports Director Peter Horton said.
"We haven't had full-sized jets since 1989," Horton said. "We have never had a low-cost carrier."
AirTran is considering one daily, nonstop flight between Key West and Orlando, a route that Delta and Continental abandoned last year, leaving no carrier servicing that route now, Horton said.
