Looks like Amtrak California has been trying to reduce overcrowding on the Pacific Surfliner trains. This year (or was it last year?) they added one Superliner car to each train. While this helped, popular trains such as those on Friday and Sunday afternoon/evenings are still standing room only.
I am riding on train 785 right now as I type this and it is an 8-car train. Looks like they took the usual Surfliner livery (in push configuration) and attached another engine, business car, and cafe car, on the front. Both cafe cars are open and serving. Nobody is standing and it's pretty nice.
Forgive me if this is old news. I only ride this train once a week and last time it was an old-school train with extra cars, but all single-decker Amtrak livery. I believe this 8-car Surfliner configuration started at the beginning of August. A better experience for the infrequent travelers.
