I'm coming into Munich on Sept 1st and was hoping to rent something small and fun but also something I can drive to Italy for a couple days.

Does anyone know who allows travel into Italy with cars like a BMW 1 series, or Audi a3?

SIXT for sure and I guess all other major car rentals as well.
Just to get this right: the car goes back in Munich or is this supposed to be a one-way rental?

One way rental for sure is also possible, but will cost you (talking about SIXT) about 300 EUR if I remember right.

I'm sure Sixt does not allow Benz in Italy... not sure about Audi and BMW.

Yes it does:

Cross Border Rentals are allowed to the following countries:
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.

Cross Border Rentals are allowed to the following countries but not with Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, VW, Porsche, Jaguar and all Jeeps/Offroader:
Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia.

It is also allowed to enter the last-mentioned countries with all vehicles of car groups IVML, IVMR, SVMR and FVMR (including Mercedes-Benz Vito, Mercedes-Benz Viano, Mercedes-Benz V class and Mercedes-Benz Vaneo) and vans

In case of offence against Cross Border & Territorial Restrictions all insurances lose their validity.

Welcome to FT Jayomatic!

I'd try to rent with Sixt as well. Normally you don't have any hassle with them if you want to cross boarders. If you want to visit some eastern european countries make sure you give them a call in advance or write an email so that they can offer you a suitable car (see the list by Zaphod above).

That has to be new. I distinctly recall not being allowed to bring a Benz in Italy so we had to go for another car. Thanks for bringing that up - this is good news.

Hope so. Otherwise my trip with a SIXT MB CLS to Italy in June could have become very pricey for me ;)

I think it's relatively new indeed - I also (although faintly) remember something about restrictions for Italy.

It's not all that new. It has been like this for many years now IIRC. We were allowed to go to France and Italy with an Audi and a Mercedes back in 2002. Certain cars like the S class were excluded from cross boarder rentals though which has obviously changed.
